Even with your insidiously optimistic view this stretches things. Are you really happy for the team to continue in this vein of mid table crap? 3 years of KR claiming that we "dominated", "were the better team", etc etc He even started once to spout statistics related to chances and attempts on goal as being evidence of how good we were.

We want to see the team winning, going up, collecting trophy's not all this post match crap we get now.
What trophy do you expect us to be winning? The league cup? This has been a frustrating season but we aren’t in a bad place and have had a pretty good ten years. I wonder how Everton fans feel? They seem to have been in the same places for about twenty years, not a couple.

2 wins off the play offs.................... still there to be had.

Unless of course you are a quitter like most of the fanbase.

Winners never quit, quitters never win.

:)

Agree completely, while not over the moon to coin a phrase we are roughly where belong at this moment in time . That may change with bigger investment and a new Stadium and/or a winning formula but looking at the top three this Season Hull, Sunderland and Peterborough and they are all spending massively more than us and have a better set up.Although ours isn't the worst I've seen.

Can I have some of that stuff you are on , happy pills I'd imagine 😁😁.
Yes still possible but a hell of a lot of teams would need to capitulate and we seem to be more likely than any of them!

By their nature pendulums stop, briefly, at either end of their sideways progress.

They're almost entirely in-between.
But the pendulum is moving at its quickest at the lowest point of the swing, and slows down as it approaches the highest points. Therefore most of the time the pendulum will be closer to the extremes!

Yes I’m generally optimistic but this part of the season is all about the teams in form, and we really aren’t. I think someone here produced stats about teams who lost in the playoffs often doing less well the following season, and we seem to have been a bit hungover for most of it. Got to say, today feels like the biggest failure of all, after playing well at Sunderland. I’d managed to rationalise Northampton as an aberration ...

We have never been challenging for promotion.

Because of the traditional terrible start, perhaps.
Something I posted on another thread regarding this season’s league results if you split them into thirds:

First 13 games: 13 points.

Second 13 games: 30 points.

Third 13 games: 13 points.

Record breaking, title winning form for 13 games. Relegation form for the other 26.

Well after today, not just today but I feel
I don’t want Hanson, Winnall, Hall, Grayson, Shadipo in a yellow shirt next season
Well that’s for starters .......

How’s Shodipo on that list? As frustrating as he can be to watch the signing of Barker has pushed him to the right where he’s done naff all. Before then he was contributing somewhat regularly. Besides he plays for the badge. Unfair judgment imo

Our last 11 games has been relegation form. Not really sure how people still think we are play off candidates.
The form of Doncaster, Lincoln and in periods some of the others near the top were also really poor. I don't think anyone saw us as a dead cert, but looking at the games we had left to play compared to others I think we were at one point. Northampton and today proved that in reality we had a really good run that we didn't have the squad to keep up for the season. If anyone thinks we are realistic playoff candidates now even I'd have to say they're barmy!

I agree with your sentiment, but come on, you have to admit, apart from a nine game run mid season, we've been crap all season, and are so inconsistent, and although mathematically, we could still make the playoffs, all the other teams above us, are not only head and shoulders better than us, and at least 6 points ahead of us already, but they've all also got at least one game in hand on us as well.

I hate writing off the season with 21 points still to play for, but we simply aren't good enough this season, and I think it would be more prudent to start getting our house in order NOW, and start making plans to clear out the deadwood, promote some youngsters now, and try to get a head start on the competition for next season, rather than keep flogging this season's dead horse.

IF, by some miracle, we manage to sneak our way into the playoffs at the same time then great, but let's be realistic, we're miles off the level required.

I'd take Mide back and wouldn't complain but I think we can do better. Barker should be available again so we have to hope we can get him back with Cooper as back up, and then bring in a pacy specialist RW. If we get Mide on top of that great, instead of that and we have a problem.

This summer will be an important one. Where actions need to live up to the words. The squad cap obviously played a role previously, but we seemingly have £££ to spend.

Starting from the playing style of the team find the players to fit rather than a load of players that broadly fit numerous roles (I know the cap will have played a role in this). Players like Long and Forde are valuable, but to also have Hanson, Henry, Lee getting shifted around can’t be helpful.

With our reliance on feeding the wingers, we need the quality at LB/RB to supply them. I think if we have the opportunity to upgrade those positions this summer then we should. Also a young specialist back up to Gorrin...he is crucial to how we play and created chaos when unavailable. Yes Brannagan can play as the 6 but to put an imoobile Henry and Lee next to him is poor. I suspect Barker will be available in the summer - money clearly an issue. Lee would be a good addition...possible Henry upgrade. McGuane would be a fantastic permanent addition and adds something different to the midfield. Someone like Luke Bolton might be worth a look too.

When KR teams are at their best we have players progressing the ball through carrying the ball...at one point last season we had Holland/Browne/Cadden/Fosu/Baptiste. Our greatest threat is now Barker and our CB going on a mazy one.

Anyway, sure we have plenty of summer plans that will now kick into action

I think the main problem we have had this season ( apart from long injury absences to key players), is that many, if not most, of our players have been wholly inconsistent from one game to the next.
So many times an XI has been picked which has gone down well in the build up, based on recent performances, only for a number to play like they've never seen a ball before.
As such, I m not sure we HAVE a best XI, as it fluctuates from week to week.

Top 5 now seems pretty much nailed on as they stand, with 6th going to any one of a handful of teams. On current form, that ain’t us.

Agree Shodipo has a better all round game than Barker, he'll do his bit at the back something we lack from most of our offensive players.
