Ex Player Jack Stevens

If he carries on as he has been playing then I wouldn’t be surprised if a championship club put in an offer this summer, he’s a young, athletic, mobile keeper playing regularly in league one, his style as a sweeper keeper is what all clubs are looking for.

Glad we got the new deal so at least we should be able to hold out for a decent price but holding onto players in league one is not easy once the bigger boys start waving the cheques about.

With all respect. A Championship team would of come in for him in the summer to be their second choice on a free but I can't see anyone putting an offer in that we will accept now he has signed a new deal.

We will be after a second choice ourselves with Eastwood surely let go. No chance we are letting both keepers leave. Let's enjoy him after all we have made him the keeper he is and he has shown his loyalty to us.

While KR has undoubtedly contributed to the positive development of Jack Stevens.
It must be said that he was very slow to give him his chance. Easty was costing us time and time again with continual errors.
In truth, if Simon Eastwood had been replaced by Stevens at the start of the season, it could be argued that we would still be in the box seat for a playoff place.

Ahh the minutiae of decisions...... when do you drop Easty ? After 2,3 or 4 or more "shaky" performances? Or just brutally at the season start?

If we lose him this summer ,or any of the back 4 then I would be gutted. What a base we have for next season and I'd hate to see him go and sit on the bench somewhere instead of a full season with us !
Let's go to the championship with him !
I think our model means we will be losing a couple of key players this summer and can see at least one of our CBs going.

I think Cam Bran is the likely one to go this summer ....if we seriously want promotion another season out of 22/23 year olds when if promotion comes the value of them would quadruple .

I agree it will mess our promotion ambitions up and it would result in higher value for players but of course promotion is not guaranteed. Selling players each season is what essentially our financial well-being is based on and can see at least two key players going.

Lots of us were calling for Stevens to get a chance long, long before he did

Don’t get me wrong none of us are geniuses who knew how good he’d be, and I don’t want to be unfair on Robbo

But I feel he deserves little praise for waiting until Eastwood’s position was untenable to finally give Stevens a go

Jack coming in earlier may have changed our season around, or we could have continued to have a mare and it could have hit his confidence.

Stevens came in around the same time where Atkinson returned and Sam Long moved back to right back. All three deserve huge credit, but one may not have succeeded without the others.

That isn't to knock Jack in any way. He has been fantastic and deserves all the praise he gets. But any assumptions on him starting earlier can only ever be guesswork.

Yes there’s a lot of captain hindsight going on here. Obviously if Karl had absolutely known he would be so good he would have been in sooner, but I’m sure a lot of young players have looked good in training but not made it in the first team.

I dunno, it’s a very simple idea but having better players on the pitch probably contributes towards success. Stevens is a better goalie than Eastwood, the defence looked like it was shitting itself with him in goal as he has no presence in and around the box and his positional sense is gone.

Having an aggressive, quick, athletic goalie who is confident and commands the area completely changed us, the defence grew from him coming into the team.

Depends what they offer, we have a system built on letting people go if the price is right, can’t see that changing with what has gone on over the last year.

Surely it isn't that simple is it?
Who on earth knew Stevens would be that good?
What if he had 2 stinking games and his confidence was shot away.
Then you have what 6 to 7 games to go to the transfer window with 2 keepers with confidence issues.
It is so easy looking at things in hindsight . Nobody knew a 24 year old keeper would be anywhere near as good as he has turned out to be

Was our defense shite because of Eastwood, or did Eastwood look worse because our defense was all over the place?

Chicken, egg!

I guess it's all fairly irrelevant now. Jack has grabbed his chance with both hands and will hopefully stay our no.1 for many seasons to come.

Jack Stevens has been one of the major positives of this entire season for me. A league one standard goalkeeper we haven't had to pay any money for. I was very vocal in my criticism of Easty, I'm sure a great lad but just not up to it anymore. How many league goals has Jack conceded since he came in? He's done brilliantly.

Total games, he’s kept 11 clean sheets in 23 games this season.

In his 26 for the club overall, he’s been on the losing side only three times.

The boy’s a winner.
