Home Match Day Thread 23/01/21 L1 - OUFC v Bristol Rovers

I've seen Winnall play live in the Championship a few times and he looked a totally class act. In terms of talent, he's got it, there's no doubting it.

It's all about fitness with
He's been at Oxford for four and a half months. How long are you suggesting that we should wait until he gets fit? He may have been great in the Championship some time ago, but at this stage I find it hard to recall anyone who has been more off the pace than Sam is at the moment. I wish him well, I really do, but he's currently the waste of a space.

Winnall plays in a very similar way to Taylor, neither are particularly quick or target men and both rely on making clever runs to find half a yard of space. This type of play takes a little while longer to get going, and Taylor looked out of sorts at the beginning of the season too.

Winnall is get a few minutes here and there, but with several games coming in the next few weeks he'll likely start a few and we should judge him after that. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get double figures for the season, and if he does that alongside an inform Taylor, then we'll be right amongst the playoffs before long.

Worrying about MM, I think Kelly wants too much time on the ball, Shodipo has been on the weights no doubt.
Funny way of spelling steroids 😂

Unfair. He's been injured for most of that. He might be a stroke of genius, he might be an epic fail. Too early to judge.

This side has a really solid spine now. Moore-Atkinson-Gorrin-Taylor is a stellar base to build your team around (in League One, at least).
They've all been in terrific form recently, and were all bang on it today. Don't think you could go wrong picking a MOTM from that bunch, but I'd have given it to Taylor as well for the key moments than won us the game.

When he's back to full fitness, we'll be able to add Cam to that list. Very encouraging performance today - not quite back to his best yet, but he's getting closer.

Hope McGuane's not going to be out for too long. I was really looking forward to seeing a Gorrin-Cam-McGuane midfield trio. Plus, KR has already got enough work to do in the next week locking down a winger and CB, without having to replace McGuane as well.

Henry? Sigh. His movement and positioning was intelligent as ever, his set pieces were generally good (just a couple of bad ones), and you can't fault him for effort. But his passing today was absolute bobbins. And it's frustrating because we all know the player he can be when he's confident and the flicks and passes are coming off - but they just aren't at the moment. Meanwhile Shodipo was lively today without ever producing any end product (not his usual MO, which is to be invisible for a half and then pop up with a screamer!).

I'd add Stevens as part of the Spine ..just growing and growing with every match

I hope you are right. For Barnsley and Scunthorpe before that he was a class act (64 goals in 142 games). Since the end of his time at Barnsley in 2017, he has played 47 times and scored 11 goals. Even if he can recapture the form of the last spell, he'll be hard pressed to get anywhere near double figures in the 25 games and a few pizza trophy games we have left as he'd have to score once every other game or so, especially because Taylor will be starting the vast majority of them if he keeps scoring.

We scored after it had been flicked on twice! It was in no way the danger zone, unless literally anywhere in the box is the danger zone. Come on, you can’t say Taylor’s first goal all stemmed from a superb corner into the box.

The corner was flicked on directly by an Oxford player and was clearly a planned routine to hit that player based on the players' positioning.

I respect your views, Mr. Egg, but if Sam starts any game in the next few weeks - not even the PJ QF - I'll be absolutely amazed. And as for scoring double figures, I'll cheerfully buy you several beers, should that be the case. Here's hoping.

So is @RyanioBirdio, whilst watching 😅🥖
I don’t know what to do with myself at the moment. Matthew scores all the goals, so I’ve got that going on, while Josh is probably the most conventionally good looking so he’s always nearby in terms of my thoughts. Now Jack comes along and looks the part, makes flying saves for fun and wears pastel colours that really show off his skin tone.

It’s a complete nightmare. I’m taking five or six showers a day, easily.

Bet you could snap your socks clean in half mate 😅💦

Sure I have misunderstood but you seem to be criticising him for not being able to score when he isn't playing?

We can't judge his value without knowing the terms of his contract vs other players in the squad and the division more generally.

Robinson keeps on and on about new right wingers. Henry’s days are obviously numbered. On currrent form he’s lucky to start.

On current form Winnall shouldn’t even be on the bench.

Also don’t see McGuane being a regular starter now Cam is back. Kelly immediately looked a better player when he had players with real bite around him.

Word for Stevens . Quite a prospect, could play at higher level, what’s his contract situation?

if we can beat Fleetwood then prepared to contemplate this could be a glory season a la 95/96.

Love the new outfit, but you appear to be putting on weight.

Do you mean because of his injury? Yes he might take a while to get back to speed even if it’s not a bad one. But if you just mean in general, have you not seen the last 5 or so games? He’s been one of, if not our actual best player. Kelly played quite well today and has been ok, but to say he’d get in the team above McGuane (on his recent form) is just complete and utter madness

I agree. I think Kelly’s influence depends on how the other team setup, and whether he is forced to collect the ball deeper than he/we would like. He had to do that for the first half 20ish minutes today and struggled to move the ball forward, or get his passing going. He looked a lot better after that but other parts of his game, let him down.

Personally I think a midfield three of Gorrin, Brannagan and Maguane is absolute filth. Kelly is a great option to have though.

Very impressive performance. Just to think only a few weeks ago after the swindon game the mood on here. Robbo out and most of the players, grim relegation struggle doom and gloom........And suddenly here we are brimful of confidence, defence awesome, attack threatening, hungry players trying to get on, do we actually need anyone. Feeling scarily positive!

And what else happened around about the 20th minute?

Remember Kelly has barely played a game with Brannagan alongside him. I can recall the Newcastle cameo of course , where he was excellent . On that performance today he starts on Tuesday. And if he continues in that vein then McGuane will be the player benched.

Anyway, good performance today and Rovers couldn’t really touch us.
