International News Covid-19 .....

so you cant travel 5 miles ( in Derbyshire) to exercise, but you can (now) go fishing ( but not overnight) then?....

Allegedly the idea about the use of curfew was mentioned to Johnson and was dismissed as being ‘unBritish’ or suchlike. I would have thought that the potential for preserving life might be prioritised, whatever happened to pragmatism?

"We are british, we know best"

Which is essentially what the attitude has been for a year now.

Scottish football below the championship is suspended for three weeks, why not all the leagues in Scotland?

I am guessing because Scottish football is part time below the championship, meaning they all have other jobs. Can’t really be in an elite sport bubble in you work in a factory with hundreds of others most of the week.

I keep coming back to something I posted on here back early in the first wave.

A friend of mine who was working on the distribution of grants to businesses was party to daily update calls with government officials. Back then the officials warned him and his colleagues that the government was expecting a second wave in the autumn/winter and that the second wave would be worse than the first. I remember being a bit taken aback by it.

If the government was predicting this why hasn't it prepared for it? And how can it possibly say, words to the effect that 'this surprised everyone' ?

Same as Spanish Flu, second wave killed more.

I agree 100% with the Christmas "muddle" that was exactly what it was a muddle. Many people did use their "common sense" but it wouldn`t have done any harm to have started this "lockdown" (in inverted comma`s for a reason) in October when the new variant raised its head.

"Lockdown" is not happening locally (observation - sorry).
I would have road blocks popping up checking folk and issuing tickets.
Those two women had not only travelled to meet up "for a walk" one of them had picked up what looks like a Costa on the way...... nearest one is 7 miles away, fine them make an example. Then they can cry about it on social mejia.....
Our local country parks are heaving at the weekend and not much quieter during the week! Put coppers in the car parks. Fine people.

We need to start enforcing common sense and punishing those with out it.

On the bright side it`s raining, that`ll sort out the fair weather "walkers".

I can’t see how a curfew would work. Shops would all have to close early and what about people working irregular hours? Just enforce the rules on gathering and visiting

I defended Corbyn because I thought there was no evidence of his antisemitism. The EHRC report criticised him for intervening -to suspend Ken Livingstone. And yet for years he was criticised for not intervening

I think it was done to smear the Labour Party and it appears to have worked.

Anyway I will be leaving this board. I pointed out its offensive to refer to a black woman when talking about people voting for monkeys.
If you think that’s ok this isn’t a place i want to be anymore. I’ll leave you to the delights of fashamwonderland and the detectorist. Enjoy the Fish.

But you are going to miss the debate about all things OUFC.

Oh wait 🤔

Toodle Pip.

FYI

Prefrectures around Tokyo now under State of Emergency. No law as such, but decorum is not to go out, do social activities

Here in Malaysia due to our numbers, under Lock down again and also invoked a state of emergency. Basically over the Christmas period, people went crazy and spread Covid everywhere and didn't follow the SOPS

Lockdowns don't work.
Having very different tiers next to each other won't have an effect.
Christmas...just one day, what's the harm?

Well...

I think it being Tier 1 and people going there for the pubs from Tier 3 areas such as London was what did for the IOW.

Not just Tier 3...a ferry away from Tier 4 no less.

"The lifting of the national lockdown in December left the island one of only three places in England in the lowest level of restrictions. It meant islanders could meet in groups of up to six, hotels were open and pubs were allowed to serve alcohol without food. Yet Portsmouth, only a 45-minute ferry trip away, and one of the first places to see significant transmission of the highly-contagious new Covid variant, was in the strictest tier 4 restrictions, alongside London."

Yep this is another worry, I appreciate Xmas is a time for joy for many but Boris should have for tough and said no, even if only which would be the main reason was to save lives.

Too late.....let the schools reopen and let the covid riddled students return home.....bringing the covid to their homes and infecting their parents and grandparents....oh and dont forget let every tom dick and covid into and thru our airports without any testing whatsoever.....absolute recipe for disaster....who are the dumbarses that are advising Boris and his gang???

I guess it's unlikely that Danny Agyei or Jordan Obita are going to be reading the Covid thread but I cant imagine that they would be happy with what was written.

I don't see why Essex yellows singled out Claudia Webbe come to that -
I don't believe it!
that's possibly the first time in your 1K plus messages that you have made any reference to Oxford United or it's players, management, match threads etc.
Being an Oxford United fans forum, I'm just surprised it's taken you this long??
Anyway, I'll let you get back to your crusades!

So cases are still on the rise, well Yes and No. Across the whole of the UK they are indeed on the rise. However in the areas that were placed in tier 4 one week before Christmas, where people were told to stay at home and forbidden from meeting up on Christmas Day, these areas have experienced a reduction in cases.

This pretty much shows that a lot of the current increase in cases is not down to the restrictions not being tough enough - it is down to the government's idiotic decision to allow half the country to mix on Christmas Day and spread their viral load. They should have placed the whole of the UK into a Tier 4 lockdown. Also the decision to allow children back to school for just one day wouldn't have helped either.
