Not sure she's the only one with that problem.

Indeed, Conservatives and EU want to protect their own position (who wouldn’t), so we end up with this stalemate.

Can’t tell me if Labour were at the negotiating table we wouldn’t still have had these difficulties, unless they just rolled over of course.

I'd disagree.

I would have thought that voting for something you disagree with comprises your future leverage.

Your vote in a general election is secret so it can't be forever rubbed in your face in the same way votes in parliament are.

But back to my original point, she said avoid a no deal at AT ALL COSTS.

So why would she then not vote for a deal and risk no deal just to save face?

Well, nobody knows that. And let's not get into the 'would Labour have done any better' discussion again, we've been down that road. It's pure speculation and should not be used to excuse the failings of the current lot!

Unfortunately the Tory party has a minority of MPs who seem to see any sort of deal with the EU as some sort of surrender ('rolling over'?) so there isn't as much agreement even on our 'side' as there might be on what the negotiators should be trying to achieve.

I agree.. I didn’t want to go down that route either... my original post just said that I found her comments amusing and that they were all the same (politicians in general).

You are right, we will never know the outcome with a different government, but the EU are part of these negotiations too and don’t want to “rollover” either.

I would be amazed if they find common ground in time.

It is a mess whichever way people spin it.

I explained what I would do. I don't support everything Labour do nor everything it's MPs say.

From everything I'm reading, it seems like they're coming to some sort of agreement on enforcement and the level playing field.

It sounds like UK will stick to EU environmental, worker protection and quality standards in return for free market access; and if the UK chooses to diverge from those standards in a particular industry, it can, but we'll then lose free market access in that particular industry, and those exports are then subject to tariffs. Which seems less like a compromise agreement and more like pushing off the tough decisions to future governments, but whatever if it gets a deal done.

But it equally sounds like they still haven't sorted out fishing.

It's hard to believe that BoJo & co. would subject the whole country to the customs disruption and higher prices that come with WTO rules solely in the service of a single tiny industry (and some flag-waving chest-beating about sovereign waters), but that seems to be where we are.

I'm certain that they'll get a deal done eventually, but it's going to be painful for a lot of people if it's not done in the next two weeks.

It's the only fair way. Why's it taken so long to reach what appears (if I'm not missing something) a common sense position? Are they being paid by the hour? 🙄

Ermmm I thought the EU "rulebook" on workers rights etc were being transposed wholesale and sorted out by us "as & when" ?

We also tend to forget that our standards on many things are a lot higher than those of the EU and some member states.
So we can levy punitive tariffs on Spanish tomato`s grown under acres of environmentally damaging plastics with sub-Saharan slave labour working in them then yes?

Winners all around. :)

Yes, they are. But all the arguing has been about what happens as and when Britain wants to change its standards (in the less protection direction) - or in particular what happens if the EU tightens it's regulations further in any area and Britain doesn't want to follow.

As I understand it, the EU basically wanted to immediately financially punish Britain for divergence, whilst Britain wanted to conduct a sector-by-sector review only once every four years. Sounds like they may have finally settled on some middle ground.......

I look forward to punitive sanctions on Spanish tomatoes.... :)

surely that is also true of the EU? Why would they bring down the whole deal over a fishing issue that is pretty irrelevant to a lot of EU countries?
Not only that but IF there is no deal , there will be no EU fishing in UK waters.
As usual there will need to be a sensible compromise on this but it appears that the French fishing industry has to be appeased as well as the UK fishing industry.

as always ... the French are revolting

Everyone is familiar with the river of blood speech, but I have to confess I've not heard the Dave Beasent "Rivers of P1ss" speech

Aah! The smell of sovereignty.

Can anyone deny that if a single remain politician had, during the campaigning, described exactly what has in fact happened in terms of getting a deal, they would have been massively, massively shouted down as ‘project fear’ and told ‘it will be the quickest, easiest deal in history’ etc,

Anyone want to deny that someone describing the exact truth would have been called a scaremonger by the leave campaign?

A jingoistic meme will be along shortly. Thank you for your patience.
