Taking this discussion out of the James Henry thread, and will start it with the post from @BrockBuster. Please continue the discussion here.

On Football Manager (not the be all and end all, but something I thought people might find interesting) I've taken a look and it's listed as below:

Having looked at this list I think it needs a hell of a lot of tweaking. Some of these players certainly wouldn't make my icon list. Would be interested to know which you'd move down to Favoured Personnel and which you'd bin off completely. Likewise if there's anyone you would have on that isn't listed.

Legends
-
Ron Atkinson
- Jim Smith
- Joey Beauchamp

Icons
- Gary Briggs
- James Constable
- Matt Elliott
- Malcolm Shotton
- Denis Smith
- Dean Whitehead
- Kevin Brock
- Phil Whitehead
- Mike Ford
- Kemar Roofe
- Paul Simpson
- Chris Allen
- Paul Moody
- Chris Basham
- Dean Saunders
- Phil Gilchrist
- Jim Magilton
- Alan Judge
- Mickey Lewis
- Les Robinson
- Josh Ruffels
- George Baldock
- Danny Hylton
- Jake Wright
- John Trewick
- Michael Appleton
- Sam Long

Favoured Personnel
- None

Well for a start I would add
Hugh Curran
Jon Aldridge
Johnny John Shuker
Nobby Clarke
Trevor Hebberd
George Lawrence
Jason Seacole (for what he should have been)
jim Magilton
All at least icons some legends

What is the difference between an Icon and Legend, how do you differ between the two?

When did Chris Basham ever play for us!!??
And in many ways that list is laughable and an insult.

I’m a mid 80’s boy so All the 86 team, Thomas and Rosie.

After that, Jimmy Mag, Joe we got him and how good he was unbelievable. A grey player and loved the Ox nightlife too!!!

Then, Paul Simpson, he was class and a left foot to die for. So good and often forgot as proven by this and the previous thread.. should have for a better move than he did but we all know the reasons behind that..

I’ll throw in Fordy and Phil Whitehead.

Without being disrespectful they played way above their limits for us and were always a solid 7/10 every game.

Fordy often popped up with goals too whilst Whitehead never ever let us down and was very very consistent.

Speaking of legends where has Chrissy Allen gone? Rosie surely has earned legendary status by now as well.

I’m confused about what makes someone a legend. Does it have to be good? Where do Johnny Lager, David Rush, Bananaman fit? They’re some of the ones that stories (legends?) are still told about.

On the other thread I was trying to distinguish legends, heroes, and folk heroes

Yeah in FM terms it tends to go:

Legends -> Icons -> Favoured Personnel.

So as a comparison, for Man Utd it's Busby, Ferguson, Cantona, Law, Edwards, Best, Giggs etc for Legends, Beckham, Scholes, G Nev, Schmeichel, Bruce etc for Icons and C Ronaldo, Rooney, Butt and Van Persie etc for Favourite Personnel.

I'm not the Oxford Utd researcher but I work at Sports Interactive so if we can get a decent consensus on what it should be I can get it changed for FM21.

I'd add the category "Cult heroes" to the mix as well. Not enough games or not skillful enough to be a legend or an icon, but more than just the dry term "favoured personnel".
