Ex Player Alex Rodriguez Gorrin

Have to say that when a young player is two years on from signing his professional contract, and he's only able to get a loan gig at Tier 7 of the football pyramid, it seems to me to be pretty indicative of a player that's not going to make it. At OUFC at least.

At a bare minimum, you'd want a serious prospect at that age to be starting regularly at National League South level......

It was only two years ago that Robinson was saying he was one of the best young players he had worked with, and was going to play in the PL. He’s coming up to 19 and still being loaned out to the Southern League. He also said Nico Jones would be an international and now apparently no non-league teams even want him.

What happened?
Isn’t there a doubt over when the Conference will start?

I tend to agree. It's really disappointing. Lopes and Jones seem.to have made nowhere near the progress you would have hoped for (Spasov was out for nearly a year I believe)
Moore will quite rightly suggest that some players are late developers. But you would think that if these players are close to a L1 team, they would surely be wanted by Confetence clubs ( accepting that times are tough due to Covid)

In the first team matches that I've seen them play in, I never really understood the hype.

Lopes ran around enthusiastically, but never did much.
Jones didnt have any standout attributes either.

I know they were young, but....

do we know what young players at other league 1 clubs are doing though?

Robinson got too carried away at the time.

It may be all that are willing to take on loans at the moment with the uncertainty surrounding the NL even playing. So as a result the club have decided to take up what was available.

This is simply about getting these young players game time. The national league was due to start on 3rd October but may well be postponed further. These moves mean that they could get 3 or 4 games in before the conference even starts, so nothing to overly worry about just yet.

From somebody watching the game at Biggleswade about FL:

He looked tricky and dangerous early on, and linked up well with Wade's main striker, but became less and less involved as the game went on.

Clearly has talent, and a decent touch and tricks to his game, but also needs some work. As you suggest, an extended spell in men's football, probably at that level, will do a world of good.

I did see one guy in Oxford training wear who looked like he will have been there scouting him, as well as another in an Oxford mask in the bar at HT, who looked like he may have been his father.

Fabio Lopes presented with his man of the match champagne for the “ the Waders” from the Rt Hon Alastair Burt, former MP for North East Bedfordshire, who sponsored the match.

Robinson bigging these lads up is no bad thing, confidence is a huge part of making the step up from age group football to the professional game. Worked alright with Dele Alli.

If they are not good enough then they won’t make it, but building up their confidence, and young people today live more insulated lives than ever before with social media etc, won’t hinder them.

Watched the game back, and I thought Liam Kelly had a decent game yesterday. The position he plays means that he does a lot of the ugly stuff that never gets noticed unless he misses someone. Gorrin faced criticism at the beginning of last season until the rest of the team settled, and I think the same could be said this season. But yesterday, as well as being busy and disrupting the play, Kelly was also able to move the ball forward quicker with midfield splitting passes.

Gorrin is more brutal, and I'd love to see him back. But more performances like that from Kelly and we've got a player that can make a real difference this season.

I think if the rest of the team are moving off the ball then Kelly becomes far more effective with his passing. When the team is static, Kelly often has to pass sideways and then it often just goes back to him which makes Kelly look a bit ineffectual.

Thats actually a really good point.

Be nice to actually see Liam to recognise him. By the time we are back in the stadium we will have to be reintroduced to the players .........those were the days, I remember etc etc..

I've said it before, but I think Kelly is going to be awesome in the defensive midfield role when we're playing inferior opposition.
When the job is a little bit of defending and disrupting play, and a lot of getting on the ball and launching attacks, he's going to be an excellent asset.

When we play better quality opposition, however (like Sunderland last week), I still think we're going to miss Gorrin in a big way.
His defensive positioning and discipline is outstanding and he does so much to protect our back four. I just don't see Kelly - who first and foremost still has an attacking mindset - being able to replace what Gorrin brings in those games.

So hopefully Alex is back sooner rather than later, and then I'd love to see KR apply a horses for courses approach......

Leon Chambers-Parillion has joined Fabio Lopes at Biggleswade Town on a youth loan. He scored their 3rd goal in the 7-4 home league win over Leiston:

Ex Oxford players Scott Davies is a player-coach and winger Jonny Giles is also there and scored a hat-trick. Here is the hat-trick goal:

Chambers Parillon has a great habit like Lofthouse of popping up with goals in games despite not necessarily having the best game.
