Home Match Day Thread 19/09/20 L1 - OUFC v Sunderland

Winnall, Kelly on a new loan deal, Clare, Cooper.

They are all good players but need time to bed in.
Winnall obviously has pedigree but hasn't played much for a couple of years and is injured - personally I'll wait to see him playing and fit before I judge.
Kelly (as I have said before) does very little for me as a defensive midfielder. A good half a game here and there isn't enough.
Clare is NOT a right back. Not in a million years, no matter how much KR would like him to be. He was all over the shop today, and Sunderland knew exactly where the weak spot (or at least the most glaring one) was.
Cooper? Looks good, but he is very much a work in progress.

I don't think any of them are bad players, but let's not pretend they are going to transform this team.

So that I cannot be accused of jumping on the poor start wagon I have always been in the Robinson I like camp.

Today though was poor full stop.

We are notoriously slow starters but has it got to be this way everytime? Have we got a locker full of 'we'll show them later' when we eventually come good. I do hope so but on this evidence we are so way off a length.

We haven't got anywhere near our pre Covid days yet. The playoffs to me were toe curling added to the actual play off itself. Today we looked at times unfit - where is the 'we'll be one of the fittest if not the fittest squad in league 1 come the start of this campaign'? We were second best all day long and Sunderland knew we were vulnerable especially after the Wycombe and Lincoln matches. But this type of brain fixation within our squad should have been cleansed by our back room gurus the club employs...

This marathon and sprint spouts are all well and good in the nicey nicey camps but it has to be said that added with last week plus the playoffs the team and its direction at the moment doesn't augur too well especially on my Jericho richter scale.

Early days yes - but if you asked any manager on just the second Saturday of the new season if they would be chuffed with zero points on the board I'm pretty sure not too many would saw they're own right arm off at the mere mention of nil poi ! I'm absolutely sure under Robinson's mask he is extremely pissed off atm and probably concerned that the squad is no where near to the pre-season hype. And why have we got so many injuries again to deal with so early plus Sam the man?

Things obviously need sorting on how to deal with high pressing teams etc etc plus the need to have several leaders and not several hiders cemented in our starting eleven pretty quickly as well.

I'm a patient geezer - but tonight Matthew I'm not.

COYY'S.

Winnall could go either way, that’s why he is here. It’s a gamble. Let’s see when / if gets fully fit.

Kelly has had time, he knows the set up, he knows the management. Bar one half in the playoffs and free kick v Newcastle, he owes us a lot.

Clare, Cooper, The jury is out on both and harsh to judge them on the first few games.

Just seen KR’s post match interview. He says players will be leaving after todays showing. ‘It doesnt matter if youve been here one day or a hundred days, theres an exit door’ or words to that effect. Im wondering if and when we’ll see Sean Clare in an Oxford shirt again? I really dont think its all his fault though. He’s clearly not a RB, somebody at the club got it horribly wrong with that one. The poor fella’s confidence looked shot to pieces. He does look like a good footballer so hopefully we’ll admit defeat on the RB experiment and try to play him in an area more suited to his attributes

Build up play too slow, ponderous and too many touches. We seem to get outmuscled and beaten frequently to the second ball. Henry doesn't deserve to be starting, he's been really poor since the re-start. I think the CB pairing looks dodgy. Long is no LB. Kelly is not a DMid. Clare can't defend, more of a winger. Cam is out of form and confidence. KR has got to change things and pretty quickly.

Once we get the left back situation resolved, maybe play Long at RB and Clare in front of him. Henry is horribly out of form and Sykes is a bit inconsistent.

I agree, I think Clare might be on borrowed time. Think we will see him in an Oxford shirt again but wouldn’t be surprised to see Robbo move him on in the winter window. Not too sure what you’ve seen in him that says he’s a good footballer. So far, nothing I’ve seen screams out ‘good footballer’.

I think he looks tidy on the ball but has absolutely no defensive qualities whatsoever. In hindsight, to bring in a first choice RB who, by his own admissions, is watching videos of RBs to learn the position was ridiculous

Swindon went from top to 12th.
We win a game we could go into the top 10.
There are 44 games to go and nobody won a league in September.

Chin up, push on.
Or we could win and stay in the bottom four.

I imagine plenty of teams thave have won a league that they wouldn't have done so if their September points were taken away.

I think we can all agree that Clare is no right back - the club have said he was learning to be one, and TBH it does not look as if he is a natural there! I think it would be a little unfair to him to dump him on that basis. The club *knew* that was the case, and I too think he has shown glimpses going forward. I'd be tempted to play Long at right back (and Ruffs at left back of course when he is recovered) and use Clare on the right of midfield.

Indeed - a better start last time out would probably have seen us automatically promoted. We only one 1 of the first 7 games.

He cost money and is on a three year contract, so I bloody hope we get some value out of him. "On borrowed time" after two games and off in the winter...just, wow!

Sorry @Steve Gilbert i have to disagree Winnall when fit could displace Taylor on his 2 performances so far this season, sorry Clare is not a RB Kelly has been poor and Cooper i
Has just stepped up from Part time to full time football and I do like him but sorry that’s not a good transfer window

Would be nice if the management help to their hands and said, you know what, we for it wrong. Parts b Lincoln was wrong and lots today was wrong.

Instead we get first year pro’s thrown under the bus.

We get players from a few games to numerous saying they are threat of being moved on.

We get Sunday team meetings publicly announced.

Scouse mentality by Robinson...
