Home Match Day Thread +++ 29/02/20 OUFC V Southend Utd +++

Ugly win yesterday, but the record book says 3 points.

I think Elliot Moore has been outstanding since he has replaced John Mousinho in the back four

Who were the unsung heroes for me in February?

Head of Physical Performance Chris Short

First Team Physiotherapist Amy Cranston

First Team Sports Scientist: Dwayne Peasah

Nine games in 29 days is a tough schedule

Just listened to the after game RadOx segment on BBC Sounds. Does anyone know what they were referring to about Karl having to go into the stand at the end ? Something about a supporter, Karl saying he's not wanting any of that sort of negativity around the place and the club would sort it out? Didn't see any of that.
See the sol campbell 'incident'? Thread

I remember over the famously congested Christmas period, we picked up more points than all teams around us. And appears to be the same in the back half of February.

Not sure what it is. Congested fixtures usually lead to a fairly even spread of points with teams losing one or two of their many games.

I'm a bit worried about what happened when we came out of that first run into a calmer January, and the poor form once we were able to catch a breather.

Perhaps we need to arrange some midweek closed door friendlies? Not too competitive that we're exhausted, but enough that we're not off the pace with a week between games.

When i was a lad I used to play 3 games in 1 day. Players these days [emoji6]

Or put it another way I used to work 45hrs a week, think I could manage 3hrs a week, I agree there’s to much made of I’m to tired cos I have played twice this week

What job did you do when you worked 45 hours a week?

And if the players only work 3 hours a week, I'm pretty annoyed that we've spent so much money on a training ground that we never use.

I think the problem after Christmas was that we had a number of injuries to key players, so had to keep using players who were clearly knackered, so inevitably our form and results suffered.

We seem to be getting nearer to a full squad of players now, with key players having returned from injury and regained their form, and even Woodburn is on the verge of returning as well, plus Thorne and Kelly are getting fitter, and Agyei is a lot more involved, so hopefully after such a busy month, we can deal with the fatigue issues a bit better.

I think Forde is overrated at right back (good player overall though) and Long played better against Accrington than Forde has in any of his recent games in defence. I accept that Long had a dip during our recent wobble though so I can see why KR is experimenting with something different, but if you were being purely fair on recent performances then Sam Long should get another shot at the position.

I also don’t think Gorrin should have played that game, at home against a team low on confidence and struggling at the bottom of the table I’d have preferred to have seen Thorne spray the ball around and actually pass it forwards. Gorrin is a brilliant player when the chips are down and we need someone to battle and rat around in midfield, but he does sometimes look to go backwards too much, and slow our play down. Needs to work on not giving as many free kicks away as well.

Luckily we have super Matty Taylor so we got the all important win. Hopefully the lads will benefit from a bit of a rest and we can come back strong next week...

Not much of a spectacle yesterday the strong winds again didn’t help with the type of football we like to play. You have to give Southend a lot of credit for the way they battled and made it difficult for us. But we upped the tempo in the final quarter of the game and got the all important win. When you have a striker like Matty Taylor you know when the chance comes he is likely to score and he took that chance brilliantly.
lets hope we can look forward in the coming weeks to watching matches not played in gale force winds. But with ten games remaining we are in a great position.

I think we have to be grateful that Eastwood is again showing what a good keeper he is. He was impressive at Ipswich last Saturday after having a few games that were well below his best. Peterborough wasn’t his best but the players must have been exhausted after nine games in a month including the difficult games with Newcastle and added time.
Four wins on the bounce are excellent. To win at Ipswich was excellent. Our home form was poor for years, but so much better this season.
Question is can we win at Shrewsbury. Like Southend I would take a 2-1 or 1-0. We’ve had difficult games recently. Although Southend looked easy on paper we had to get a win. Southend will go down but they will play their remaining games with less nerves, as they only have pride to play for.
i didn’t think we’d make the play offs last week as Rotherham and Peterborough both look stronger and Portsmouth are on a real roll...they’re yet to lose at home. Hopefully we can take three points off them as that could just propel us into the top two.
We desperately need to sign Matty Taylor. I’m sure he’d like to stay at his home club, and Bristol City will want to let him go if the fee is right...surely we have some money available after Fosu and Baptiste fetched good money

Again, I don’t think there’s a fee, isn’t he out of contract?

Isnt Matty Taylor a free agent at the end of the season?.... will consider his options carefully Idve thought, probably the last decent contract he'll be getting will be the next one he signs? ... hope the board make him a realistic offer that will meet his aspirations

Matty Taylor is a free agent this summer. His agent can use that and his record this season to get him a very good deal. It will depend on whether Tiger et al are willing to spend maybe £100k on a signing on fee and offer a 2-3 year contract. I think Matt is nearly 30. I hope the club competes on this one. Better Championship sides may be wary as he will be seen to have failed at Bristol City. We do have an advantage in that he seems to love it at Oxford, rates KR and is a home town boy who started with us.

Got a feeling we'll drop points at Shrewsbury. If for no reason other than that would, I think, be our first-ever perfect 5 game block (at least since the system was introduced by MApp in 2015).

Matty Taylor is out of contract in the summer so it'll be a case of seeing where we all are and making a decision in the summer.

Basically, what he said in post match interview yesterday..

I hope he stays.
