Home Match Day Thread +++ 29/02/20 OUFC V Southend Utd +++

Does anyone know why Southend wore a Sport Direct sponsor free kit? It's been a long time since I saw a team play sponsor free. We had to tolerate Animalates, so surely someone in that area could put a few quid up for their company to be seen?

Apologies for the link from The Sun though, dirty rag.

Not really, they've played 17 games in 66 days. Coupled with a number of those players coming back from injury.

Admittedly, we had a high number of games in February, but even 17 games in 66 days relates to slightly lower than 2 games a week.

Robinson who likes to look at all ways of aiding the team/players, both mentally and physically, so I find it surprising that he would make comments about players being tired etc e.g. filling the players with reason/justification to be tired. May be it fits the disappointment of losing players on the last day of transfer day meaning the squad is smaller than required.

Anyway, we’ve managed to do extremely well throughout February, so I hope that now we’re basically back to one game a week we’ll be fine now, physically.

Well done Karl/Team.

Also, not sure why Karl keeps having a go at Gorrin last few games. He’s played well, but Karl keeps having a go at him and shaking his head when he’s on the ball even when he's passed it correctly. However, if Browne tries something or loses the ball when an easy option is on he (Karl) ne er has a go at him.

Maybe because Gorrin always seems to have a first instinct to play the ball backwards, even when he has plenty of time to turn and look to play forwards... Hence slowing down possible attacking play needlessly.

That’s not true though, he’s one of the players who tends to increase the tempo of play and play it forward..

Didn’t see us struggling like that today but I am mighty glad of those 3 points as it didn’t look like it was happening.

I did say in my pre match team selection that we shouldn’t take them lightly, they’re a league one side, not a conference team, so all the talk of a goal fest was premature and a bit silly really. People made the same mistake earlier in the season when we went to Bolton!

It was always gonna be a tough game, and while on another day, things could’ve been different, and we score a hatful, it could also have gone the other way, and we lose, but it was a game at the end of a hectic month of fixtures, in awkward weather conditions, and I was always gonna be happy with a scrappy win if need be.

4 wins on the bounce, and back in the playoffs, so I’m as happy as a pig in s**t right now!

This.

I like Gorrin and I understand the need to do the simple things and screen the back line, but his game appears to be missing the ability to do positive things with the ball. I hope, when Thorne/Kelly are fully fit they may show a bit more adventure in their distribution, if they play there (or that Gorrin works on that part of his game)

Genuine question.....do you play the game?

Yes, used to.

I genuinely don’t believe it should be that difficult to play 2 games a week.

Have you seen what those cyclists do whilst doing the Tour de France?

It makes me laugh when these Premiership teams complain about the amount of games/about having a winter break etc, then come the summer when they can have a break they’re flitting around the world playing pre-season friendlies!

Since Liverpool had their winter break they’ve actually looked worse even though they said they felt fully refreshed.

Really?
Gorrin has been one of the players of the season I reckon.
I agree that he has been good, especially at breaking up opposition attacks and covering space.
However, when he receives the ball from the centre backs, to me the impression is his next pass is more often than not back to the CB.... not always, but often. I guess we would need some stats to confirm either way.

Gorrin’s job is to put out fires, clean up the mess, and keep things ticking over, and it’s a job he’s been performing admirably all season.

Reflections the morning after

Southend stuck to their game plan and it nearly got them a point. When it was 1-1 conceivably they could easily have nicked all 3. Theyre going down to league 2, but, if theyre playing like that theyre going town fighting. And playing football. Talk about win ugly.
Pretty much the entire team looked off the pace , understandably after 9 games in 29 days. Eastwood had to be at his best to stop them scoring on a few times. That gusty wind didnt help , same for both teams of course.
Respect to just shy of 500 away supporters who know their team are relegated (maybe not mathematically but the writing is on the wall) who turned up to support their team (drum was rubbish though)

Happy that Matt Taylor's scintillating goal scoring form of late continued and stole us the 3points, & keeps hopes n dreams of Championship football next season very much attainable

Just listened to the after game RadOx segment on BBC Sounds. Does anyone know what they were referring to about Karl having to go into the stand at the end ? Something about a supporter, Karl saying he's not wanting any of that sort of negativity around the place and the club would sort it out? Didn't see any of that.
