Away Match Day Thread +++ 18/01/20 Gillingham v OUFC L1 +++

At the start of the season Sykes was about to be sent out on loan, responded and now is featuring more. Perhaps Agyei, another young player learning the game, will do likewise.
Playing devils advocate, is it because he’s responded, or is it because there little other option at the moment? Not knocking him as hes done all that can be expected but does he bring what Henry did? Sykes and Agyei are definitely ones for the future and will hopefully do well for us but if we want to go up this year we need a little bit more for now I think

If you look at the Gills home form in the last 5 they won 4 and Drew 1 beating Pompey Sunderland and Doncaster so I reckon a point is a good result
We have lost to Donny and Rotherham but drew with Ipswich all very tough games against top six sides with our top scorer out and our playmaker out
Let’s get some perspective here

I hope youre right, the squad definitely needs a boost. Do you envisage loans or permanents? I really think we need to push the boat out for an experienced, reliable striker, signed on a good 2-3 year deal to give everyone a lift and maybe restore a little faith that this can be our year.

This is a shitty time of the year to be getting strikers on permanent deals. Goals get teams promoted and save others from relegation. Ideally you want to find someone who is out of contract at the end of the season and offer cash upfront rather than nothing in the summer. But then you'll have a dozen other clubs doing the same. Yates at Rotherham could be worth a look assuming he's only played for Swindon on loan, but there aren't too many others that scream out. So it might be another loan, but if it's the right player then it might still be worth it.

We are having a blip, it happens. We have been without (unfit when have played) arguably our two best players (Brannagan and Henry). Plus Taylor now out. We have also lost Cadden. People need to remember not only the amount of games we went unbeaten but how good we were. I'm confident we will pick up form again. The good news is that despite the blip we are still not that far off the teams above.

We havent won since Cadden left. Maybe he is worth the mill quoted. Cadden linked the defence and midfield brilliantly. He allowed our CBs to come out with the ball. As the oppisition midfielders and full backs sat back covering his attacking prowess. Long is a good defender but his passing ability is suspect. I lost count of the number of times he miscontrolled or kicked the ball out today. Hopefully a replacement for cadden is found sharpish

The idea that money isn't there for incoming players is frankly insane!!! We will do more business but it's a case of getting the right players at the right price. I'd be surprised if a player (or 2) doesn't come in this week with hopefully another (or 2) in the last few days of the window. And none of them will be on the cheap.
Are you really still spouting this bollox Scotchers?

Good post but sadly wasted on many on here. Every club in the league has a bad run at some point. Not long ago it was Rotherham and now look where they are.

What would you prefer Scotchers - for us to acquire (buy?) a striker in this window to cement a promotion push OR for the club's directors to spend even more of the funds on fees trying to resolve the stadium issue? I'm pretty sure they can't do both - or can you tell us differently?

We're going through a rough patch at the moment, which was inevitable, what with so many key players missing, and the sooner Henry, Brannagan and Taylor return, the better.

But there's still a long way to go, and in the meantime, if we can find a way to grind out some results, and keep up with the top 6 as best we can, then I'm confident we'll get going again, and make a push for the summit!

After next weeks fun away in the FA cup we go into a massive month with 8 league games (only 18 left) so hopefully the break from a dodgy run and a few players returning will get us back on track, with so many points available in only 29 days we can’t afford to drag this run out.

Need a forward and a couple of full backs in but forwards are hard to get in January (in all honesty we struggle to get them at any time of the year that’s why we have Mackie playing up top), so I reckon it will be a loan.

I think we will push on in February. A few more signings to come in this window and key players coming back from injury should see Oxford establish themselves as a promotion contender. Only Rotherham have a better squad in this league than Oxford. Everyone would've taken this position at the start of the season.

I beg to differ regarding having the best squad behind Rotherham. If that was the case, how are we so perversely affected by injuries, due to lack of depth in quality nearly every season.

Not a bad point if but a little disappointing that we led. Still, what annoys me is the unfair stick the players and KR got afterwards on RAD Ox. Three games without a win and the knives are out! We've been hit hard by injuries. 28 goals were missing from the team today with Taylor, Henry and Branighan out. Add to that Brownes injury, hence on the bench. Woodburn and Forde out too. True we need some full backs, but we're 5th. Pretty much sure those critics will be at a replay if we're draw at Newcastle. Seriously we have the worst fans if we don't win every game.

This does make me chuckle. I thought you didn’t care about us? Still joint top! ? Don’t write us off yet!
Still, you’ll get your ‘proper’ derby back next season when Swindon get promoted. ?
We don’t care about you bunch of inbreds just reading the same old shot from your fellow inbreds makes me chuckle

In a word, both.

But we know it's not as easy as that. Last year Sunderland went big (far bigger than our budget would allow) on Grigg and failed. So we have to spend wisely, and that's difficult in a heavily inflated transfer window.
The stadium is a separate issue. The costs at this stage of proceedings are fairly low and budgeted for. Finding land, doing the planning and legal bits etc are all part of the initial outlay. However, if various sites are not possible, or the cost increases then it may be necessary to look at the financial outlay on players, but I very much doubt this will be the case.

FFP means that we can only spend x amount of our income and let's just say that gives us £2m (entirely made up figure!) in our transfer budget. A new stadium could cost upwards of £50m so any savings on the playing budget would be a drop in the ocean.
