Away Match Day Thread +++ 17/09/19 L1: Bolton Wanderers v OUFC +++

Poor first half. Really poor. We should be a couple of goals down.

Lack of character really showing tonight. Nobody willing to pull the team up by the boot straps.

Massive improvement needed. This isn’t good enough against a team of free agents and journeymen still in their pre-season.

KR needs to make sure we get shape back. Too square too high up and letting them get behind but we at least won second half of first half. Great game to watch though. 1-3

This is a very painful watch. How they wasnt 2 up after about 20 mins I'll never know. We are truly awful. Some of the worst passing I've ever seen from an oxford side at any level we've played at.

Karl needs to tear them all a new as*hole at HT this is embarrassing

Well, totally lucky to go in 0-0 at half-time. We can only hope that Bolton tire in the last 20 mins if we continue to hang on.

Nice to hear Shotton basically saying what I said that our defensive issue isn’t the fullbacks, but the lack of cover in front of them.

So that was 90% rubbish.

We've supposedly got a team full of skilled, quick-thinking footballers, but we seem incapable of stringing three passes together.

The fullbacks have been hopeless. Constantly leaving gaps in behind, and not providing much of an outlet going forwards (Ruffels can't seem to stand up either).

Woodburn & Henry have been mostly anonymous. Taylor has been poor.

Fosu has at least got them scared - although he's chosen the wrong option too often (mostly that option being "try and dribble around their whole XI")

You can see why Bolton have conceded so many - there's a lot of space in and around their area, and they needed some last second Jake Wright interventions to keep us out a couple of times. But we need to be 1000% better than that in the second half. Just in terms of retaining some possession and putting some coherent passages of play together.

Yo can have all the tactics, analysis, game plan, whatever in the world, but the great thing about football is that sometimes it just comes down to sheer, unscientific, inexplicable momentum. Bolton have that at the moment. We've fashioned a couple of decent chances but they are running absolutely rampant going forward. We are very lucky to not be down. Fosu seems to be the only player capable and willing to do anything to address this, but our midfield is otherwise non-existent.

All that said, I expect us to do far better in the second half as they inevitably tire, but, looking at the wider picture, this is without doubt an unusual game. I don't think it's evidence that this team is crap - we're just being generally outplayed by a team riding high on a fired up crowd and environment.

Ruffels and Cadden gave been very poor.
We are being caught out far too easily.
Fosu looks most likely for us. They have 2 or 3 round him when he has the ball.

Outclassed by a collection of unfit rejects slung together at the last moment.

Not good! Not good at all!

All we can hope for is that they eventually run out of steam.

I think we’ll get on top after half time. The issue is will we score any chances presented to us? Taylor looks totally out of sorts so far, Woodburn looks lightweight, Fosu has shown some real flashes but Henry has looked off form.

The two fullbacks have been at sixes and sevens, Gorrin is also a bit of a concern, wins the ball then gives it away again too cheaply.

Peterborough go 1 up at Tranmere. No surprise there.
