Home Match Day Thread +++ 31/08/2019 L1: OUFC vs Coventry City +++

I didn't realise Cov were still unbeaten - they were really poor. Their midfield tried to compete with CB and Gorrin initially, but just couldn't match them. People will rightly complain about the missed chances and the sloppy goals conceded on the counter, but I'm pleased we're in a position where we are creating those chances. If I were a Cov fan, I'd be worried. They created next to nothing.

Henry brilliant, although faded in patches. He looked absolutely spent by the end. The deserved MOTM for me. Fosu changed the game when he came on, a really impressive cameo. Dickie has come on such a long way, he's turning into a brilliant central defender. That nutmeg in the first half is one of my moments of the season already! Although he did overdo it a couple of times, his bringing the ball out from the back gave us another dimension and they couldn't live with it. I was impressed with Cadden, too, who I hadn't seen yet and I thought was a really good outlet. I was worried about Mackie for a bit there - I know he always plays aggressively and loves getting in people's faces, but I thought he had properly lost his head today. Anyone know what his beef with their #6 was about midway through the second half?

I thought the officials, contrary to what I'm sure will be popular perception, had decent games. Reasonably consistent, and stopped tempers from bubbling over when it threatened to get a bit overheated. Good to see. People will point to the lineman giving them the throw that led to their third, but, regardless of whether it was or wasn't the correct decision, the goal ultimately came from us switching off.

A really entertaining game, with both teams trying to play football the right way imo. I also thought the Cov fans were excellent, easily some of the best support I've seen at the Kassam for a good long while. I'm really perplexed by 'Twist and Shout' becoming a terrace song though, it comes across as really camp! Was also a big fan of Coventry's kit, very clean.

Great post

Their first goal was sadly schoolboy defending. Eastwood set the wall up, and then before it was taken, one of their team went wide, dragging Forde off the end of the wall. The wall was not readjusted even though there was time, obviously leaving sufficient space for the shot. Basic, basic error ☹

Oh yeah. Their fans today

Definitely looked to me like someone was at fault - from how low the ball went. You accept someone bending it into the to corner, but that low should have been covered by the wall or saved I feel (without having seen it again)

Eastwood positioned the wall badly as it didn't go outside the post so whilst a well taken free kick, the Coventry player was given an easy route to goal as it didn't need much curl. The way Dickie was pointing I would suggest that was what he was saying.

I think it would have been a completely different game if Mackie had not missed two sitters in the first half, before Cov' scored. We need to get Taylor and Agyei fit. Henry put in at least 4 decent crosses in the first half that were either missed chances by Mackie or no-one in the box.

we're 18th and have 1 win all season I went mad celebrating after the 3rd goal but it doesn't change how poor we have been to start the season, I have 0 interest in hearing how we're the better team every other week and it's x,y or z that stopped us winning, our team is too good for that, so either he gets us up challenging soon or he should be gone in my opinion
It's still August.
We played a team that hasn't lost to date.
In my view ridiculous comments.

Today, that goal was all to do with luck for Coventry. Until the lovely own goals by Dabo the bouncing ball in the box always seemed to go in their favour.
Their defence was better at finishing our chances created than our forwards :). All this fannying around with short corners and wide play, just get the ball in the mixer..

Anyone slagging the performance off clearly wasn't at the game today. Sure we were wasteful with the number of chances we had and a bit shaky in defence at times, but we were by far the stronger side today and really grew into the game. Guaranteed the highlights will be 9:30 of oxford and 0:30 of coventry. As draws go, that was a very good one and very exciting.

A terrific game of football. We really should have won but are showing a whole load of bottle.
My Coventry mate said that he thought their left footer would take the free kick as he normally taken them.
He also suggested that our midfield totally dominated the second half.
Had Taylor played today he could have had a few.
Absolutely spot on. A superb second half from us. Baptiste......what vision.

An exciting game, we played some really good football but also defended like an under 8s team. You can tell that defence has just been put together, hopefully it will settle down as the season goes on.

The first own goal was a classic, he really didn’t have to do that but to then add to it with a late equaliser was a bit special.

I see Gillingham picked up their free hit win over Bolton for their first win of the season.
yep another 5 goals shipped by 'Bolton' wasnt it? ... wonder who itll be that Bolton get their first points off of this season ?
