General Sykes being loaned out!!!!

I am.not hugely surprised and hopefully he will play a lot of games in L2 and get in the team second half of the season.
I saw him in sine pre season friendlies and thought that he was a little off the pace.
Our squad is now far bigger and on paper has a lot of quality.
Good luck to him.
Most of our players were crap in the preseason friendlies.

I saw him a competive game against Peterboro and he was one of the better players. Plus, at the end of last season he was decent too.

Thing is, if he isn’t going to play regularly for us then he is less likely to be selected for the Northern Ireland squad.
This perhaps is why he needs to go on loan? Just surmising, I am not ITK.

We’ve got loads of midfielders. If the management think he should go out on loan to get games then I don’t see the problem with it.

You’ve identified the concern but I fear we’re loaning out the wrong player.

Sykes, despite being a late returner for pre season, is fit and raring to go. Baptiste could well be ahead in his return but will need careful management in getting him back playing, Hall is yielding poor reviews after his lengthy return and Thorne is also on the comeback trail.

Why are we loaning out a fully fit midfielder? He’s just the player we need right now.

It will be a good move for him. If he gets game time away on loan, he can come back in January and we'll see the difference with a player who has had regular first team football. He won't improve sitting on the bench or playing for the U23s.

Personally, I see this as a good move for all concerned.

Sykes is a decent player but will only be likely to get substitute appearances at the moment so a loan deal makes sense to give him the opportunity to play regular football. He is still fairly young and has player very little senior football at this level. Getting 20+ games under his belt in league 2 will make him a better player and someone who can come back in January ready to push for a regular first team spot.

Shocking decision for me if anyone needs to go out on loan its rob hall, looked off the pace and scared of going into a challenge, dont get Sykes going out on loan at all!!!

Yeah really not sure about this one. Sykes is a very talented young player that can play numerous positions. He also has the ability to beat a man, which is something we're lacking in the team at the moment.

If someone has to go out on loan Hall would be the most suitable candidate.

Given the performance on Tuesday, I am pretty surprised by this and have been amazed how little he has featured. He does have a bit of pace - something we are sadly lacking - and is fit. Very odd.

the reasoning as to why could be asked in todays 5 mins fans forum on Rad Ox ... I cant be arsed to pose the question (to Niall McW), after radox yet again filtered questions( for KR) last week!!!!

but maybe someone could ask/ send the question in ?

IMO an open and public Fans Forum is whats needed, where Q's are unfiltered and can be asked directly to those best placed to answer

changed me mind .... I have emailed Rad Ox asking the very Q, (sorry @Manorlounger )... though whether Rad Ox choose to ask my Q remains to be seen / heard

My own opinion would be that Sykes has not been the 100% success that was hoped for but, is this what the lad himself wants? Will sending him out on loan improve him or alienate him? Do we really have sufficient cover to let a good squad player go out on loan? Would he not improve by training/playing with our squad?
I don't know the answers but, I do have a nagging worry that this may not be a good thing. Hopefully a recall option is built in to any loan agreement.

Those questioning why he is being loaned out instead of Hall and Thorne have to consider the ongoing treatment both will be getting. Hall needs to be brought back gently. He's not where anyone wants him to be right now, but with ongoing support and some game time he has the chance to get back to where he once was. To throw him out at this stage would be a waste on everything we've done to get him playing over the last 2 years. Thorne will build his match fitness up and once ready to play will offer something very different to Sykes. He is someone who can control midfield and, if back to his best, will be heads and shoulders above players at this level.

I wouldn't really say he has pace, he's more of a central player than a speedy winger

I agree it's an odd choice as he does have the potential to be one of our best players, and I'd have him in the team based on his performance against Peterborough in the cup, but I can also see the logic of having him playing regular games - we always worry about people we loan IN doing really well and then being recalled in January - why can't we think the same about him?

The question is not whether we should be loaning Hall and/or Thorne out (we shouldn't, and I'm not convinced many teams of any sort of standard would want the former anyway). The question is 'should we be loaning Sykes out?'. And based on his performances last season and even against Peterborough in the League Cup, surely the answer is 'No'. We do have a plethora of midfielders, but Thorne/Baptiste/Hall are all injured to various degrees. Gorrin (certainly) and Brannagan (very probably) will be suspended due to the accumulation of yellow cards, with Gorrin seeming to want to collect the whole set! He ought to be (at the very least) on the bench for us and probably ought to get into the team to inject a bit of urgency.

Some logic in that but, how will Sykes feel about being told that he's not good enough to play first team games despite being fully fit when Hall, who is demonstrably not fit/match ready, gets time on the pitch and on the bench?

Loaning out Sykes but keeping Hall? Sorry but thats borderline insanity when you compare the performances of the two. Quite disappointed with this.

I hope its to free up a wage for McCleary

I suspect Mark Sykes has been affected to some degree by his mate Gavin Whyte leaving OUFC.

Heard that he’s not been his normal self and hasn’t trained with the same intensity.

If anything Whyte’s progress should prove a massive spur to him motivation wise.

Maybe if we can loan McMahon and Sykes we can free up some money before September 2nd.
