Free agents can be signed by anyone. I thought they had been released before the end of the transfer window. There must be special dispensation as he only became free this week and the Championship window closed a week before?

Probably special dispensation due to the circumstances with him cancelling his contract due to breach of contract.

The same would apply after the transfer window for other Bolton players and Bury players after the transfer window should they go pop I'd assume.
