It's still about getting the right balance. Look at what we get from the likes of Eastwood, Mous, Henry and Mackie despite knowing that we'll probably not get any resale returns. We've got more saleable assets than we've probably ever had, but their development and value will increase because of the oldies and crocks that you deride.
George Thorne is a risk not worth taking when you consider his injuries, his expected wage and then the fact we have arguably the best midfield in League1.

Matty Taylor however, is a player that would, without any doubt, add goals to the team and if you want to win the league or challenge for promotion, you need players like that. His goal per game ratio at this level is unreal and after the first three performances this season (without a goalscorer), the thought of having him here, genuinely excites me!

I am absolutely not saying abandon the model we have in place. The reason we are able to even discuss signing Taylor is because we have stuck to it. I just feel, at this point, this is a financial risk worth taking, when you consider the huge rewards it could bring to the club.

100% agree.

Taylors goal record at league 1 is fantastic but its not guarenteed he will replicate that for us. For some players and clubs it just clicks. Take Mo Eisa for a comparison why did peterboro pay loads for him and not take Taylor for a fraction of the price? Saying that I really hope he signs.

Thats a fair point and again, one I agree with. It all boils down to risk against reward. I think (and excuse me for being overly optimistic) this side we have right now, has the potential to win this league!

I know its early days but, its rare that a team gets worse as the season goes on. In fact, its quite the contrary. You only have to look at our trajectory last season, to see that!

Thorne might be a class act when fit, but so were Holmes and Curruthers.
We can’t afford to keep carrying crocks.
And now Wilder has publicly derided Holmes and Carruther’s for choosing to keep their higher Sheff Utd wage over a move elsewhere. The experiment with crocs didn’t work, let’s not repeat the mistake.

think they'll be asking that question themselves

Hey, no derision at all - you're putting words into my mouth there. Of course we need a balance of youth and experience.

What I'm saying is that there's an argument for overpaying somewhat to bring that young talent in; but there's no argument for doing so for an older or injury-prone player.

In other words, it would be great to bring in Matt Taylor - as long as he fits within our wage structure. Either because he's willing to take a pay cut, or because Bristol City are willing to take on a portion of his wages (like, for example, Luke Garbutt last year).
If we're going to have to pay a full Championship wage for him, then it's going to make me pause because we're already going to be losing plenty of money this year...….

I agree 100%.

And that's why pushing the boat out financially to sign players like Matt Taylor and George Thorne is not something we should be doing now. 29 year olds and 26 year old crocks are not valuable assets.
(although if they'll come here on League One wages, or some sort of deal where their parent club is sharing their wages - great).

I had no problem with us paying a transfer fee for someone like Elliott Moore because if he works out, then he's going to be worth many times more than we paid for him.

In addittion do we think we have any youyh players who will become good enough to fall into this category?

Apologies if already posted. Wilder desperate to get a few players (including familiar faces) off the books and says they need to drop down to league 1 to kickstart their careers. Leon Clarke included.

Given their recent injury records, who would take a chance on either Carruthers or Holmes?

Honestly, id take Samir on loan. He is a quality player and was really unlucky with his injury, last year. Holmes? Nah, that ship has sailed for me.

That’s pretty churlish. In the real world he’d have to make them redundant with a decent payoff

I get the impression he is making a dig at Ricky and Samir, in particular. Ill be honest, I dont particularly like Wilder as a person. Good manager, comes across as a t**t.

Considering Ricky Holmes has got to be closer to retirement because of his injuries than a new contract elsewhere that would be even worse.
