Away Match Day Thread +++ 16/07/19 PSF: Eastleigh v OUFC MTD +++

Totally agree that we have no squad depth. I was kind of hoping that some of tonight’s players might show their quality but alas a long season ahead as we are in terribly poor shape. Barring some tactical genius we’ll be fighting relegation unfortunately

I’ve actually sat through Ariana Grande waiting to hear if Robinson announces progress on the recruitment front in his post match RO interview. You owe me Oxford United... ?

That's possibly one of the earliest shouts of relegation I have seen.

Last week pretty much every player completed 120 minutes of football plus the rangers game.

All the games were to work on fitness rather than actual tactics. KR has been open with this. The first team didn’t play the match tonight as it gives them a full week to recover/work on shape and tactics.

They have worked the players into the ground at the start of pre season which is the right way to do it. These days you aim for your players to reach peak fitness levels at different times of the season. That starts by how you conduct your pre season training plan.

I'd have thought that an actual match against another team would have been a good way to try out shape and tactics for the first team personally. They will be pretty unprepared for Saturday's game.

The problem is that this is what we did last season, and look how that one started!

You mean like playing QPR and Fulham to help with shape and tactics?

Last pre season was very rushed due to lack of planning time/take over. We are in much better shape squad wise already than we were this time last season.

The last paragraph is very true. Chris Short must have some input on this and bearing in mind his conditioning was responsible for 3 games in April where we played with 10 men for 20 minutes or more against 11 and won them all I tend to think a plan is in place.

I agree that it has been odd. You'd have thought that the 'youth' team would have played the middle match last week and the full team would have played tonight to begin to learn to play together. As it is we now have QPR on Saturday and the first team is not only incomplete but has not had much time on the pitch together for the players we HAVE got. Many of the young players are a million miles away from the first team so it's not only squad numbers that are worrying, it is squad depth, since the club really cannot pretend the youngsters are part of the first team squad.

Like Saturday at Woking, it raises the question did KR not think through what it might do to their confidence. At times tonight Eastleigh were running rings around the youngsters.
The management cannot hide behind the fact that when injuries kick in, as they evidently do, that unless depth is brought in we will be in trouble.

We have U23's and youth that, in the coming years, have the potential to become half decent players. But tonight showed again playing quality from two leagues beneath us, they couldn't cope. Goodness knows what would happen if they went up against Sunderland.

I don't want to be argumentative, but I'd have hoped by the time we got to play QPR and Fulham we would have a team that was a) more complete and b) had actually had time together on the pitch. I know they aren't competitive matches but we will be playing a couple of teams higher up the pyramid - surely the point of that is to test the team and the tactics that you've worked on? And I still maintain that a game against a decent Eastleigh side would have been a good way to work on that. As it was, it was 'more minutes in the legs' mostly for some youngsters who will only be very bit part players in the season.
I'm sure at this time last season we had a couple of centre backs? And to be honest saying the squad is in better shape than it was at this time last season is not exactly effusive praise!

Stop it!
Relegation form...

(Missed the first five minutes)

Oxford have dominated the game while only making the keeper make one save, which was straight at him after a Jamie Hanson run and shot outside of the box. Both of Eastleighs goals came from mistakes by Oxford players, one Jones and one KB.

Player by player:

Stevens: Made one good save, couldn’t see if he could have done better with the goals, distribution has been quite good

McMahon: Poor, given the ball away a few times, not looked to get forward at all

Jones: Made some errors and fouls, got a bit fired up, but a couple of great crossfield balls, if he develops he could be some player

Allardyce: Looks very classy and graceful at times, but doesn’t always impose himself

Berkow: Ok he made an error but he’s bombed forward at times, won corners and looks quick and strong. Still very raw but again if he develops could be a decent modern fullback

Heap: Not done much, neat and tidy but doesn’t seem to offer much

Hanson: He can’t seem to get near the Eastleigh players which is strange. Like at Woking, if he was on the other side you’d say ‘he seems a bit fitter and mobile than his teammates’ but at that level. Had one run and shot but given the ball away a few times.

Sykes: Looks worse than he did at Woking. Can’t get in the game.

Lofthouse: Battled hard but seems a bit slow and weak.

Lopes: Again he’s just a bit anonymous, I don’t see any obvious traits in him

James: He’s worked very hard but to no avail. He’s very small.

So everyone was crap? We’re doomed!

Not basing this on last nights results but purely on lack of signings. Will get the inevitable 'its only July' but as it stands we are in for another long season, very happy to be proven wrong. Robinson himself has said after the last home game he likes to have his deals done by end of June and we nowhere near that. Also wasn't the budget discussed end of the season, then why again is it being discussed with Tiger last week?
