What is it with the insistence of bringing all outfield players back for free kicks and corners? Leave one up front and the opposition have to leave a couple of their defenders back to defend, a couple of big guys who can't be attacking the ball. You also have an outlet for a cleared ball. I would like to see someone like Whyte or Brown left up front to pick up balls, their electric pace would be frightening.

Whyte is always uptop on corners and if 2 defenders stay back then so does Holmes otherwise he goes in to mark the extra man. Our issue is actually getting the ball out the box it seems to always breakdown on the edge of the box and we have to stop the counter and recompose ourselves.

The subtle but brutal brilliance of Mateo Corbo. That was a strangely enjoyable period.

One of my favourite players, always seemed to get booked each time he played, amazed he didn’t receive his marching orders more often.

Wasn't his record something like, played 12, booked 10 times, sent off once (for two bookings)?
Told he was being offered a new contract and to enjoy his holiday, only to be let go while on a beach somewhere IIRC?

No he started up front but came back every time.

That’s what I thought too. It did seem overly defensive minded.

One thought I had - why isn’t Holmes on set pieces? He hit a brilliant free kick against Sunderland and yet we have Garbutt on them now (his corners we’re good on Saturday - all in the right places - but his one free kick was a mishit, tame effort).

As for Corbo - loved him and probably one of the most naturally talented players I’ve seen in an Oxford shirt at the Kassam. My personal favourite was our 3-2 win over Ian Atkins’ Bristol Rovers when he hit a 50 yard pass right into Craig Davies’s feet. He then spent the rest of the game charging after Junior Agogo. Oddly enough he wasn’t booked that day.

Plenty of the Rovers line up either had or ended up having a spell with us too.

Lewis Haldane! I’d almost completely forgotten about him, had some great moments in an Oxford shirt.

Up field then he returned to the edge of the box.
Sorry to go on but that’s not right. There were a number of occasions in second half where the ball was launched quickly to him after we had defended corners. 2 Wycombe defenders back with him at all times.

Whyte really is a quality player - predict he will go further up the pyramid than O’Dowda.

Jesus, I started the post because it's something I have seen for too long. But, you can disagree with me, this is a forum. Just watch what happens against Walsall.

I also like to see one or two players upfield from opposition corners but no team leaves “a couple of big guys” to defend when they have a corner. It’s always the smaller quicker guys to defend against a quick counter attack. Brannagan is usually defending when we have a corner.
