World Cup match chat

Cracking game, thought Spain might fall apart with the goings on but there quality has shown through plus I sort of forgot how good a lone forward Costa can be.

I think it’s been an entertaining start, a hammering, two late winners and this one, I think a few posters on here have maybe, Oxford aside, lost interest in football, nothing wrong with that but not everyone has.

Ronaldo late on with a free kick ain’t what you want to see in front of you as a goalie is it?

Now THAT was a decent game worthy of gracing any World Cup Finals !:D

Part of the first round of games, for me, is always seeing which star players seem up for it and on their game.

Evidence of today would suggest that Suarez is not.....and if that's the case, you can write off Uruguay as serious contenders.

Fair to say, by contrast, that Ronaldo is probably up for it.

With Iran & Morocco to come, he's going to be thinking about having the Golden Boot wrapped up before the group stages are over!!

And on the more general issue......

.....the World Cup group stage has always been about a mix of games, and that's what makes it wonderful.

There's some instant classics like we just saw with Spain & Portugal, there's absolute shockers between bad teams like Morocco/Iran apparently was, there's gross mismatches like Russia/Saudi Arabia, and (hopefully) there's a couple of surprise teams thrown in. It's that variety that's part of the charm every four years. And I think, with 32 teams, you have an almost perfect balance.

The problem with going to 48 teams is that it's going to shift the balance towards less classics and more shockers.....and apart from a few nations that might now get in when they wouldn't have before, and the FIFA executives that benefit from their kick-backs, I don't know who that benefits.

Cracking game, had everything, penalty, goalkeeping howler, great strike, briilliant free kick, plus plenty of good play. Ronaldo may have the biggest ego in world football but he’s an amazing talent.

Annoying thing about CR is the amazing talent has that dark, dirty cheating side. Penalty or "leg left trailing to ensure contact" ?

Due to work shifts, the Portugal v Spain is the first match I've been able to watch live at these finals. It did not disappoint. What a beaut, will last long in the memory.

That Nacho goal

Nacho's goal looked brilliant in real time. It wasn't until they played it again from behind him when I realised just how good it was. Spectacular and a fantastic game.

If you couldn’t enjoy that, football just isn’t for you. Even my football passive mum was loving it. She is on an over 60s holiday in Madeira, mind, and she said the island exploded.

The World Cup is alive and kicking!

Watched it on catch up Likely Lads style .

f**k me - what a game. Ronaldo is immense as a footballer, no matter what you might think.

Must be really staking his case for top three greatest of all time with the amount of trophies he’s won. Ridiculous both domestically, in the Champions League and even a European Championship medal. Just image if he inspired them to a World Cup - think you’d definitely have to consider putting him above Messi in the long running pissing contest.

Not seen much of him before but Isco looks to be a fantastic player for Spain - incredible feet !

Well, watched it after 9pm and I'm with the Old Man on this one:
The paths to scoring a goal are infinite , and they're all valid

Nowt wrong with the result and for the first match the performance was more or less acceptable. It won't do against Russia or beyond the group but it's a good place to grow the winners from. Nandez looked pointless and de Arrascatea, Vecino & Bentancur need garra with them - hence Cebolla & Sanchez and eventually Torreira. The Old Man has a puzzle to solve, since we'll be playing more teams that will park the bus. Nandez mustn't start; sort it out Tabarez!

Suarez looked like an enemy had forced him to tow a caravan; perhaps a positive was that he was so angry - if he can channel that he can be Paolo Rossi. Godin looked rather brilliant up against not much.

Cant see France winning the World Cup with the full backs they have, given how important they are as an attacking outlet in the modern game.
