Transfer News January 2021/22 Transfer Window

There is another tweet confirming that Wilder has put up 3 players for transfer. No mentions of loans. I wonder if Marcus Browne could return on a permanent deal for a minimal fee.

It seems our transfer windows consist of getting in one decent player, two or three promising youngsters who we’ve never heard of who go onto be really good and a couple of decent loans plus one or two has beens or crocs who don’t really do it

That sounds OK! I don't think any club has a 100% success rate with transfers.

Wasn't it Mapp who started the getting injured players/history of injury back to their previous form via Sports Science?

Would you prefer an unhappy player and potentially unhappy dressing room atmosphere for the rest of the season?

Or sell Sykes and don't replace him with anyone? Browne was an example, but if you think you can get a player in January who's been playing regularly I think you're going to be disappointed. The players available to sign in January are available for a reason.
January market is not a closed shop. It is just more difficult to find value because there is a premium on players due to the disruption it causes the selling team. Not only do they lose a player performing well thus damaging their season, they likely have to dip in to the market themselves for a replacement. Every player at this level is available if you're prepared to pay the asking price.

The January market is often a thriving one because it is the last chance to get fees for players who want to run down the last 6 months of their contracts. Clubs below the Championship can ill afford to turn that down.

He’s properly moved up to the north east now. Bought a house and has a dog and everything, like a real boy. I don’t think he’s coming back in any form unless he has absolutely no other offers.

I'm just hoping that it's different people involved in the stadium move than with transfers. If not, with our ruthless efficiency we should be targeting a move around 2056.

Each to their own, but I think our recruitment has been superb for six or seven years now.

Some mistakes of course and even in Pep’s mad six months we managed to pick up James Henry!

I don’t know - that’s a hindsight thing because it’s a decision you can’t reverse. Would you rather have had the international career of Ryan giggs, or of Tony Cascarino?
Eh? Not sure I follow you. Giggs was born in Wales and only ever wanted to play for Wales (he played for England Schoolboys because he went to school in England). Cascarino was born and brought up in Kent, and played for ROI because he believed he had an Irish Granny (he didn't, as it turned out!). Giggs would have played 100+ times for England, Cascarino probably never. My point is that Sykes can absolutely choose to play for who he likes, but whereas he would have got 30-40 caps for NI, he's pretty unlikely to even get in an ROI squad. He declared for ROI after (apparently) he was sounded out by them. But the word on the street in Belfast is that his agent was stirring, as ROI never picked him, despiet the alleged 'interest'. He played all the NI age groups, and they were furious at losing him. No indication at all he was planning to switch.

.... I think its common knowledge that his agent is a total and absolute w****r

I posted that this is what was happening in August 2020. Same as when Baptiste declared that he wouldn’t play for Grenada as he wanted to play for England a few months before he left. It was a PR play from the agent and was designed to get people talking, which it did as it was on national radio at the time. Same for when Sykes ‘switched’ and I heard it being talked about on BBC Five Live. He had also just been given the 10 shirt, as had happened with Whyte the summer before when the club was trying to drive his value up. OUFC was as happy to sell him as he was about the idea of getting a move to the Championship, but the bid never came.

This is why I think he’s likely to move on in the summer for free and pocket a lot of cash. I hope not but I think it’s logical.

Think I’d be correct in saying that deal was agreed with Appleton! Luckily Henry still signed with Pep as manager. Pep technically didn’t sign anyone of note 🤣

Chris Wilder - "Marcus Browne is in talks with a couple of clubs over a permanent move."

Ikepeazu as a target man plan B type alternative might be worth a gamble.
Wonder what sort of a fee their after for Browne. Think Uche will end up back at Wycombe.

That doesn't make sense does it? Sykes Cam Moore can all be obtained this window so there are others going to be available unless we're the only club that leaves the Exit door open
Sykes and Moore due to only having 6 months left on their contracts, Cam would be a huge fee. We are a club that loses £2m a season and must sell to reinvest. The sensible option is to reinvest in those types of players in the summer. If you think OUFC are going to go out and spend that sort of money in January on proven players you will be disappointed. There's no written absolute rule, it's just generally how the market works in January. Some clubs will spend big bucks, often more than a player is worth, for proven, match fit players, we are not one of those clubs.

That's exactly what I said, but we are not a club that can splash the cash on those types of players. We will look for loans, players that are high quality but recovering from injury or out of favour. The club have done that well in recent years and I don't expect a sudden change in transfer policy because fans think we can match the spending power of other clubs in January.

I agree, our recruitment has been in general excellent, if somewhat biased towards wingers. It just seems from the outside that the process is slow and painful, and often left to the last minute - maybe this is partly due to the way it's reported.
