Dean Whitehead

Dean "Moonface" Whitehead, as he was known at Stoke.

A fine role-model for the modern-day footballer. Started in the lower leagues, worked hard, captained clubs, got a couple of promotions to the Prem under his belt and played a fair amount in the top-tier too. And stuck with the same Mrs from the age of 18, without (to my knowledge) being led astray like many other playboys in the game.

Good to see him going in to coaching, top guy. Proud to call him a product of the Yellow youth system.

Well done Deano!

Some of that interpassing with Chris Hackett down the right side towards the East Stand will stay in the memory. Both had good pace.....granted at a lower level, but great all the same. The career for a Football League player seems to get shorter and shorter.....all about fitness levels.

The greatest ever product of our youth system?

Sure, Joey was more talented, but Whitehead had by far the better career with over 200 top flight appearances.

The only other rival I can think of is Mark Wright.....but his time at the club was comparatively fleeting.

(n.b. my knowledge only really goes back to the 80s.....I'm sure there's some old-timers that can point to other greats from the 60s and 70s that got their first chance in yellow......)

Sam Ricketts had a good career after leaving us, even if he did have to step down to go up, you know what I mean ?

In recent times, the only others to do as well were probably Robbie Mustoe and Sam Ricketts (Plus Matt Taylor & Craig Davies - depending on what stock you put on our role in their careers)

Robbie Mustoe maybe? Even he was up and down with a Middlesbrough side that could look brilliant one day and then relegation fodder the next.

With you on the talent v success marker though. Joey was the most talented, Dean Whitehead was the one who applied his talent better.

Matt Taylor deserves a nod as another who made a good career out of himself. Whether he can count him as ours, I’m not sure.
