International News Covid-19 .....

Could it.

Well when all other countries have stopped the Omicron variant by rigid testing and border closures (they've already failed to do this), and the UK is the only country struggling to manage it (symptoms described as "extremely mild" by scientist who discovered it), then you are welcome to come back to this post for some morbid point scoring.
I'm not really sure what point you're trying to make. What's your plan? Saying 'oh I'm not bothered, I'll be fine, I'm a big tough guy' doesn't really count.

My plan? I have no medical degree or professional qualifications. I'm not here to make a plan. This is a football forum where we share basic layman ideas around a topic none of us are suited to advise on.

I was really just having a basic discussion with QR surrounding the merits of stopping SA travellers at the border and testing them all. Same goes for putting countries on the red list. We see it didn't work previously. The plan has not been adapted since Delta or the original virus, and it didn't work in either case. Therefore, I hypothesise, given the fact the disease is already detected in other countries what's the point in being upset that we didn't stop and test all SA travellers - it wouldn't made a difference.

Not sure where your quote is from but I don't think I've said that.

They haven't called it Xi for obvious reasons. As all along, the WHO priority has been to protect China.

The quote about mild symptoms is taken well out of context unfortunately. There are very few old people with it at present so we just don't know. I saw a graph this morning showing that the SA hospital rate is increasing.

People are trying to downplay this I think, hoping for the best which is understandable. But there is a reason scientists are so worried (I work for a health/medical analytics company and they are WORRIED) -my gut feel is that the world has been dealt a big old s**t sandwich.

This is just fantastic for all the wrong reasons.
:ROFLMAO:
Like trying to keep a fart in your trousers?

Surely one of the main flaws with this argument is that we don't rip our trousers and pants down when we fart. In fact, surely most people actively try not to fart whilst round other people.

Basically I think what he's saying is that it's fine for me to have a big curry tonight and then pop round his semi naked to rip a few out directly into his face, because 'why bother trying?'.

We see it didn't work previously.
Inability to implement (aka failure to organise a P**s up in a brewery) is at fault more than the principle of the measures. Like putting somebody in goal with no arms. It’s not that having a goalkeeper doesn’t work. The real art is in convincing people to dismiss the thing that you’re incapable of managing, so that you’re never held accountable for your failure to handle it.

And don’t tell me that I’m not suited to advise on footballing matters. You don’t know anything about my track record on Championship Manager, and my current save on Football Chairman is unrivalled. Have some respect for the owner of football’s most decorated club, Monkey Bum Bum FC.

It’s funny how the South African medical association chairperson Angelique Coetzee, says that this supposedly super powered new variant hasn’t produced anything but VERY mild cases ie a sniffle and a bit of a cold. Which has been around for years and never found a cure, only cough medicine and paracetamol.

Coetzee then goes on to say that the World Health Organisation introducing these drastic measures ie travel restrictions again is a complete overreaction.

I couldn’t agree more.

From it I deduce that since Piers considers it pointless to wear a mask on your face, he therefore takes his trousers off every time he farts, or something like that?

I mean, I’m giving oxygen to these freaks by even commenting on them but - jeez - if you’re going to plan a flash mob at least learn the words to your song (it’s only one line repeated, Piers. Not too tricky), try to find a consistent tone (there’s a mix of showtune and football chant thrown in) and buy a proper mask to add some legitimacy to it.

It won’t be making Christmas number one that’s for sure.

I’m confused. Do you think it’s a real thing or not?

I note that one of the first countries listed as having cases is Australia.
Given that they have only just started really relaxing their covid border controls after all this time I wonder whether this strain will hit them harder because fewer of the others got in?

You want to be careful underestimating this Piers bloke, he peeled a sticker off a window you know.

I'm waiting for him to clarify what the song means exactly, but in the mean time I've been wearing my pants and trousers round my face and a mask on my a**e.

4 hours in and I haven't caught Covid or smelt a fart yet. You can't argue with those statistics.

If it’s the cases I’m aware of they are in quarantine. We’re still pretty strict in Oz. We’ve had the other strains too mind, because of lapses in quarantine (the Sydney airport chauffeur who basically gave us delta).

The most successful viruses aren't the ones that kill the host. If they were, they'd wipe themselves out in a generation. Hence why the common cold comes around in various forms every year, with slight mutations to it's make up so scientists have never developed a 'cure' for it. It's hardly deadly yet it remains from an evolutionary standpoint a success story. Ultimately, this is what will happen to COVID eventually and it'll just be viewed as a bug that goes around. However, we're still only a few variants in. It's still very transmissible and making people very ill.

You've chosen to miss out some key comments from Angelique Coetzee that have cropped up from her interviews over the weekend. The patients she has observed are under 40 and not in any vulnerable category. Also, she said that there has been an overreaction to this but added 'we'll have to see in a fortnight'. She also pushes for more people to be vaccinated too. You can read more here.

So for your 'I couldn't agree more' I read 'I've cherry picked the bits I like and agree with them whilst I ignore the other stuff'.

I refer you to Page 1. :)

According to stuff landing in the mailbox with monotonous regularity.....

"Since this is an RNA virus, it will continue to mutate as long as it continues to circulate in humans. Additional mutations as the virus adapts to the human host may make the virus less severe or more severe, or less or more efficient in spreading."

On a positive note the global economic crisis it may cause will make Greta happy as less "stuff" is made & shipped around the world, fewer folk flying about to places, few less people on the planet.......... its a winner! ?

From Page 1 - ahead of the game by some distance. :)

The mailbox was less full than expected today.

Heard that last night on 5 live. A positive reaction on the stock market this morning. Let's hope things are looking up.

He's got a big stash of Monopoly cash as well.

Not contextually accurate?? This is the scientist who discovered the variant. In the spirit of listening to experts, are you of a medical background? Should I be listening to you or her?
No, its not contextually accurate because you have omitted so much.Yes I do have a medical background, but not in virology or microbiology. You can listen to whom ever you wish, but I think it's important to listen carefully because all the reports I have listened too, read or watched say "it's too early, it will take weeks to make any predictions". Which, in my view, makes good sense.

Omitted so much? Why don't you quote the bits I've omitted from that scientist's statement and explain how it's not contextually accurate, then?

The scientist didn't say it's not too early to make concrete predictions about the behaviour of the variant, and neither have I. I'm not saying the scientific community has decided the virus is safe. It's hard for me to understand your point because you seem to be arguing with a point I'm not actually making.

Once again, the point I was making was that strict testing of incoming SA travellers was (and remains) completely futile. The variant has already spread worldwide. It is coming in every day from new locations - masks and track and test don't work to stop the spread.
