Home Match Day Thread 16/10/2021 L1: OUFC v Plymouth Argyle

Hey, it was Plymouth.

For large parts of that game we had a team who are unbeaten for two months completely on the ropes. Should be pleased with that at least.

In terms of that front 3: Whyte should've played 90 minutes at right wing today. Henry looked promising at number ten if only he could finish. I really like Holland but for 85 minutes today he was woeful.

Having a roast dinner this evening so feel entitled to say Herbie Kane is different gravy. Thought Moore was absolutely solid today too, Taylor's finish was gorgeous as well.

Today's performance was nothing to be ashamed of against a very good team, certainly no reason to be fantasising over sacking our manager!

As I left today, a Plymouth fan stopped his car and asked 'where are we?' I was about to start giving directions, but before I could respond he yelled 'we're top of the league' and screeched off!
You know we lost 3-1 at home right? The moment Plymouth became a "very good team" is where our manager needs to watch and learn.

Moore needs to leave and shut the door behind him, not good enough if we want to progress, its as quiet as a mouse on that field, defence not good enough sorry and am not over reacting, we need winners on that pitch, also up top we could do with a young big robust centre forward, Simms from Everton, bullied us for fun for Blackpool,
Can’t agree at all with the leave sentiment but have to agree Moore was pretty crap today. Got done far to easily for the first goal, also noticed several times in the first half it was Thorniley doing all the shouting and encouraging and absolutely zilch from Moore.
Not his typical decent performance level, looked like he was struggling with fitness or injury.

I thought it was a good game of football, shame about the result but a great advert for League 1.

Despite our impressive start, we couldn't deal with their formation and game plan, especially in the first half. I lost track of how many times they got in behind our full backs. We were getting killed by their wing backs, pretty much every time the ball went forward for them it went out wide and then quickly back inside. Our full backs couldn't get out to their wing backs quick enough, then they'd put it in behind where the full backs should be for one of the two forwards or an attacking midfielder to chase. This pulled our centre backs out and then they would always have at least one midfielder bursting forward, along with the spare forward and the wing back from the other side. If you look at all their goals this is what was happening - the ball was always in behind the full back. Fair play to them though, they attacked with real purpose.

I want to see Whyte on the right wing in future. That's where he made his name for us.

Already looking forward to Tuesday night.

Robbo reckoned in his post match interview that we had’nt lost a home league match for 12 months or so
but I could have sworn we lost at home to Crewe, Swindon, Portsmouth, Blackpool and Accrington since last October.

Not for the first time this season, finishing cost us that game. They only made a good 5/6 chances but took 3 of them, we missed countless chances and opportunities I lost count.

Plymouth will make the playoffs this season, they can be ruthless on the counter attack.

Kane and Brannagan are a sensational duo for league one, we aren't getting the best out of them, what a shame they were both sat deep for 90 minutes today. They should be creating further forward.
Our finishing was dreadful, as it has been in some other games. But I don’t think Plymouth will stay top, they were really good going forward but we created loads against them, and I don’t believe they’ll maintain that level of fluency.

Oxford Mail says Whyte is in the 10, with Henry on the right. I’m sure they’ll rotate in the game.

Whyte seems an odd player to play ten, not really a passer but his pace will cause defences trouble on the break. He won’t track back much though…
Very positive line-up.

I was really disappointed with Moore in the 1st half and for me he looked very stiff (back perhaps) and a yard off the pace.
In the 2nd half he looked much, much better and started to dominate aerially and brought the ball out well.

I've been watching the players warm up for a number of weeks, particularly when they practice their shooting, who do you think has been hitting the cleanest ball over the last few weeks and finding the target the most often?
From what I've seen it's Cam and Taylor, you then throw in the likes of Sykes, Dan and Holland who's shots very often go wayward and that's very often what we've seen in games.

I think we missed Cam playing further forward today and it was a shame because at Hillsborough he and Kane were absolutely brilliant.

On Tuesday I'd play Henry just behind Taylor and put Whyte on the right. I tend to disagree with a lot of fans today because for the first 20 mins of the 2nd half we were causing them all sorts of problems, particularly down the right side, I understood why Whyte was taken off after he had Covid but combined with Henry going off Plymouth must have thought job done.

The most dissapointing thing for me today was our anticipation off the ball once again when frequently very good balls were put in the box.

I think Plymouth were good today and had a couple of very good players but over the course of a season we can certainly catch them.

Let's put Shrewsbury to the sword on Tuesday

Bright start, brilliant opening goal and all seemed rosy.

Then Plymouth discovered that we weren’t all that in the challenge and they frankly turned us over. I doubt that would have happened with Spanish hatchet on pitch . He played in Sheffield Wednesday win, so why wasn’t he played today?

We lacked a lot of strength and speed . Holland is a very incomplete player; has ability but simply doesn’t seem to be very good at tracking back. The left hand side with a non tackling left back is therefore weak. Watch the better sides target us here.

Plymouth weren’t all that but they kept their shape and the 14 has a bright future; very impressive. They had two or three seemingly FIFA moments where we couldn’t touch them and bang, goal, goal, goal. The reality was that we let them have too much space through not enough positional discipline on the day.

Honourable mentions to Moore and Taylor; kept going and kept getting stuck in. Taylor’s goal a joy, he’s such a cute finisher.

We did make plenty of chances and our play is generally progressive and pleasing on the eye but the finishing was Sunday league standard. Whyte was a major culprit. So slow to get his shot off . He needs a rocket up his a**e.

I’d imagine a few

Poor home attendance today for a very attractive game. Worsened by the freaks having over 9000 home fans in the league below.

Shameful.
They have kids 4 a £1. Their gate receipts for today was around £9,000...enough said.

COYY'S.

Maybe for the first 10 mins. After that Plymouth played us like a fiddle for the most part, overrunning our defence for the first two goals, then cutting on the break for their third.
Like other top 6 sides who we fail to beat, Plymouth were cruising in fourth gear for the majority of the match.
In all honesty, it could be said we beat ourselves, the chances we missed.

I rather think you are!!!
I don’t, think back, cast your mind to previous centre half’s that we’ve had, Matt Bound, Jake Wright, Luke Foster, Rob Dickie, Atkinson etc etc, class players, we clearly have problems at the back, think it’s obvious, we need a leader and as others have said we need to invest in this position, a lot is learnt in defeat.

On social media , seeing a lot of reports of inept stewarding , I didn’t attend today’s game so can’t comment .
Any views from those who did

You think they were cruising for the first 25-30 minutes of the second half, when we had chance after chance and were cutting through them. Really?

Matt Bound
Now, I know that Andy Crosby was our regular penalty taker for a time, but I’m pretty sure I once saw Matt Bound take a penalty that he hit so hard the keeper genuinely tried to get out of the way of it.

It could’ve been a dream, though. Perhaps someone else could verify.

Sorry but can only listen to Robinson ‘s first few seconds
Heard it all before

That wasn’t the game I saw.

Amazing how we all see thing differently.

Not sure how Plymouth could be cruising on the one hand and then we beat ourselves on the other.

Had chances gone in on both sides, that could have been 5-5.

Plymouth were clinical and we were not.

Until Whyte went off they were second best for that 2nd half.
