Just seen Mr Durnin being interviewed on the BBC,it was to do with the local elections in Liverpool.
Christ he looked rough.
He looked like a homeless person aged about 70.
Looks like the Lager has caught up with him.

Oh and he said he had played for Liverpool with Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish.
But forget to mention it was in training !

Must have also forgotten to mention getting sent off at Brentford. Wasn't called Johnny Lager for nothing!

Don’t mention Brentford.
Trains were delayed by an unfortunate fatality on the line. I arrived two minutes in and Durnin was walking down the tunnel just as Brentford scored a penalty. Score remained at 0-1. Not a great day out

He looked rough when he played for us! I have heard alleged stories of him drinking in the Brit before games.

Shame he just missed playing with David Rush... He liked a pint (and he liked a fight).

How time flys, still remember cooking lunches(home games) for him in the sports cafe, Moathouse, 89-91 he was ok most of the time but could be very moody.

I remember Brentford. I took a friend along to the game and just as it was kicking off told him to watch out for Durnin. "He's good but he'll probably get sent off". Two minutes later ....

Dragged a mate along to Luton one year (we lost 0-3). We goaded him in to starting the Johnny Lager song, knowing full well that Mr Lager was sat directly in the row behind us in the stand. Oh, how we laughed.

Certainly a fans favourite....... at one point the general assumption was he was going to be sent down (drink driving? ....not certain on that, it may have been related to an incident in Witney?), however, he wasn't, many of his teammates celebrated with him the night before a Saturday home game, some of whom put in absolutely shockingly bad performances, especially in the second half of that game. Id reckon half the team were playing with serious hangovers ( notably Paul Kee in goal for us that day) ...cant rember who it was against though?

When he was at his best Johnny Lager was superb.... his one man demolition of Luton at home, when he scored all 4 goals was my youngest lads first OUFC game.

If memory serves after he left OUFC he went to Pompey and played as a wing back for them?

I reckon an Oxford fan must have contributed to his entry on Wiki ;)

Did he not get done for drink driving for parking up on Cornmarket and going into some fast food place and the cops were waiting for him on the way out?

Sure I remember something like that.

Memories, such memories. It is 30 years past, so many on the forum have no recollection. He was quick and featherweight, with a good goal per game ratio. A real fans favourite, has to be in top 50 for OUFC.

Yes he signed for Pompey and had done so some 8 weeks before our club released the news can't imagine why :)

wasn't he on loan to Blackpool(?) from us, when he was transferred to Pompey? I can vaguely recall it was something along those lines?

i can't recall if it was near to end of season or during close season i just know it was some 8 weeks before our club broke the news after "he" told me he had signed for them....after such a delay if it hadn't of been for who told me i would have been asking to name his source :)

I remember Martin Aldridge was on loan at Blackpool when he was tragically killed, don't remember Durnin up there?

memory aint what it was ...mine that is

he, Johnny Lager, may have gone on loan to Blackpool at the end of his time at Pompey?

I seem to remember a story about him throwing someone through a pub window in Witney? I was only young then so could be a false memory!!

On the pitch he was one of my favourite players of that era, and as someone said early his 4 goal destruction of Luton was the pick of his games. I seem to remember Beauchamp having an absolute stormer in that game too.

Didn’t he take something like 12 plus games to score his first goal for the club? For a striker it was quite a barren streak but I don’t remember the supporters being particularly inpatient,
