It’s not about McGuane v Whyte, most fans would be very happy with both but realistically for our level signing just McGuane is a good one for the club. I’m happy that it’s a permanent deal.

Fans do see things differently regarding how you define a ‘Marquee’ signing ; some are seduced by Prem/Champ backgrounds, others might favour reputation/experience etc, it's all subjective.

I would consider my expectations to be quite modest compared to some and realise the club can't please every member of our fanbase.

We as fans can debate all this till the cows come home but what really matters is getting a team together that we can all be proud to support.
Absolutely, it’s fair to say everyone wants different things. But it’s harder for some than others to see you need variety in a squad - short term/long term, younger/older, spring chicken or up to his eyes in battle scars… it’s all about balance and if we had 20+ players with identical CVs, we’d be bumping in to clubs down the divisions who made those same mistakes…

I’m fully in agreement that Whyte would represent a marquee signing but I think McGuane, though he’s taken a very different path to this point, is a signing that should be celebrated and remembered when we do get in one or two that are a little more low-key. They can’t all be a headliner, sadly.

Signing Whyte is Pie in the Sky. We will continue to be financially outmuscled with our (lack of) budget by “bigger clubs”. However “nice” a club we are (and we are certainly attractive in some respects) we will lose out in the chase for good players 90% of the time. As it stands our team is weaker than last year’s and I’m not too optimistic that we’ll finish in a higher league position.

just need a Left back and we would give any side in this division a run for there money . Cooper was as highly rated as whyte and I think whyte or Sykes recommended him as I remember . McNally could be the dogs bits we
Just need to wait and see

Well lets hope me and thee are eating large slices of ‘humble pie’ when GW walks in the door! Cue more song titles forthcoming.

I’m sure there are many fellow yellows like you pondering over our chances this season with good reason.

Many I hope will be encouraged when the LB and LCB positions are sorted and 3-4 loans are in the building to cover other positions where we are lacking good competition. My worry is they are likely to be first time loans[ under 21] to get us around the squad cap. Fingers crossed we get lucky here.

I’m hopeful Will Boyle signs as he is a no nonsense bar steward of a defender that we need.
I would be happy with Elechi/Tomlinson at LB if they are understudy to someone experienced like Bennett.

Enjoy the ride!

Have to take what’s being said by the new members with a very small pinch of salt (no offence lads) they maybe in the know but it’s doubtful all these new people have signed up to give the info. My prediction is a new lb in by Friday. If not then I’m pretty concerned with the season 3 weeks away

I can see the expectation setting has begun with a piece on how great McNally is- likely as our hopes of gettingvin that centre back diminish.

He may very well be of course, indeed i hope so. But the timing seems more than coincidental as deals seem to be not coming to fruition.

Up tomorrow "Fordey has been really impressing us at left back"

Sounds great , really hope that he is another star that has been discovered.
Whole point of signing players is that they are good enough.
Very excited by this development personally.
As Shandon impressed pre season a few years back I'd love McNally to be the same

Cooper?
Noticed he got a couple of goals in a u21 game last season, from a deeper right sided position.

Think the expectation began when we signed him, otherwise we….. wouldn’t have signed him.

Sounds very promising and look forward to seeing him play. The positive comments are, of course, the precursor to “we haven’t managed to get our top three CB targets.” and McNally will start the season there.

Or maybe he has been so impressive that we don't need a direct replacement for Atkinson as we already have one in the building .

Last season showed we need a fourth centre back. Given the recent injury and age of Mousinho, the hamstring injuries of Long (who can cover CB), the inexperience of Mcnally we would be mad not to start the season with another CB.
