TBH it's common sense, if you sell your best players then you cannot expect to become a championship side in the mould of Brentford.
Is this the same Brentford who sold
20/21: Watkins - £30M, Benrahma - £24M
19/20: Maupay - £20M, Konsa - £12M
18/19: Mepham - £12M, Woods - £6.5M, Yennaris - £5M, Egan - £4M
17/18: Jota (not that one) - £5.8M
16/17: Hogan - £9.4M

And despite the sales of all these key players, they have just finished a run of 7 seasons where they never finished below 11th in the Championship. The key is getting the reinvestment and recruitment correct. If you hit more than you miss, you can solidify and progress. For example, they paid £5M for Toney (rising to £10M with add-ons). He just netted 33 league goals, setting the single season Championship goals record since the divisions were rebranded in 2004. That will have almost certainly triggered those extra add-ons, but Brentford won't care about that one bit. Their investment fired them to riches of the PL. And if they sold Watkins, who had never played a minute of PL football, for £30M, what could they get for Toney now?

It's gutting, frustrating and disappointing to see these players come and go of course, but we need to trust in the overall process and that the scouts are busy identifying the next prospects on the conveyor belt.

TBH it's common sense, if you sell your best players then you cannot expect to become a championship side in the mould of Brentford. Equally, if a club relies on loans so much, selling their best players every pre-season at the end of each season the squad fragments and you have to start all over again.
This season is already heading that way, with a new board that sadly doesn't seem to want to reverse that, and potential crocks, Bodin, already making their way in through the door.

It’s a completely rational opinion a lot share with you. One thing to point out, though, which I think is where people are trying to say there is plenty of evidence to suggest you can win this way.

Brentford themselves sold their 2 best players in summer 2020 after failing in the play offs. 44 league goals walked out the door and regardless of the fees, that needed addressing to avoid significant regression, let alone any progression. The year before that they sold half their spine including their top scorer. That makes 2 successive seasons selling your top scorer.

12 months on and another brilliant goal scorer later, they’ve gone one better. The key ingredient was their staunch belief in their processes/recruitment model and sticking to their identity. They didn’t panic, they stuck to it and got rewarded in the biggest way and got everything they planned for.

What are you expecting ? Williams was a mainstay in a team that spent pretty much the entire season comfortably in the play offs. Bodin has come out of the championship and has an impressive record at this level. Williams will be an upgrade on Barker in terms of his final ball, his work rate and his experience in getting out of L1. I think Bodin will be better than Lee too, he’s quicker and far more powerful in possession than Lee. Both are at a good age too.
Better class of players, wasn’t that the plan, is that allowed to have ambition to the next level???

Not addressed to me but I'm fairly neutral on the moves so far so will speak up.

I thought we were outclassed in the play offs, and several times against the top sides last season. I thought Karl spoke well after Blackpool, and I agreed with his assessment of where we fell short. All seemed positive for next year.

I dont see any evidence that we have learnt from the shortcomings or adapted our approach. We have signed an injury prone player falling down the leagues, and three people who played for Oxford before. This transfer window couldn't be more Karl Robinson's Oxford if it were a parody written by Kip.

It has served us relatively well in the past, I grant you. I've just dared to speak up against Mr Egg, so maybe I shall now be cast as pessimist in chief, but I don't think that's the case. Most Oxford fans feel we are falling just short of where we want to be. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. And in football, if you stand still you fall behind - based on what I saw last year, I worry that whilst we remain ahead of many L1 clubs we are starting to fall a fair bit behind some others, and not necessarily just on budget. Not to mention, I think Atkinson will be a bigger loss than some seem to. His ability to carry the ball out of defence was a significant option for us when our midfield was losing the battle and couldn't get open.

What I'd like honestly like to see is a couple of players in the mould of Dougall at Blackpool, who can add a bit of bite without turning us in to cloggers. That sort of thing would add a new aspect to our game, because we have seen opposition players label us a soft touch after beating us.

A couple of such additions in early/mid twenties, who have done the job for 30+ starts a season in L2 or similar and were chomping at the bit to step up, and I'd be a whole lot more optimistic.
Great post. Apart from Egg, is anyone excited about our transfer dealings?

I'm chuffed we signed McGuane permanently. The others though are a wait and see. A fit Bodin looks a good signing based on other clubs' fans comments but keeping him fit is the question.

Bring on the young Irish fella whose name I should really learn as the next on the Oxford United conveyor belt of centre backs. Dunkley, Nelson, Dickie, Atkinson have all gone on to be Championship centre backs since we signed them with Moore likely to follow, that’s about one a year so I will back our recruiting and say we have the next one in the building already.

All the best to Rob.

Now let’s get a few more deals over the line and get preparing for the new season.

I'm decently happy. McGuane is an excellent signing, Williams has experience, something we lacked, and Bodin is a low cost shot that may or may not work out. With the Euros, uncertainty around Atkinson until just now and an ever present lack of clarification on the squad limits thanks to the hopeless efl, I think we've done a really decent job.

But any chance to take an unsolicited swipe at another OUFC fan, right? Feels like every post is an attack on Scotchegg and it's completely unnecessary. We all want success for OUFC, even if some of us are overly positive sometimes.

Selling club NO AMBITION!

Name a few clubs which are not selling clubs? I am guessing apart from the elite of world football you will struggle.

We sell players because we have to, that will never change, easier just to get used to that and get on with your life than stress about the inevitable.

Bruce Lee once said it’s better to be strong like the Reed grass than the mighty Oak tree, I think that’s very pertinent at this moment so I will leave it for you all to ponder on.
