Ex Player Alex Rodriguez Gorrin

Old gits like me remember playing this formation at Primary school.
This then went to 4 2 4 (but from memory that was genuinely a 4 2 4 rather than 4 4 2)
Now? A whole load of formations where some of the top clubs don't even use a striker.
How will formations develop over the next 10 years I wonder.

Goalkeeper, 10 other players forced to play right-back. KR is so ahead of the curve.
The year is 2030, England have just won back to back World Cups with Karl Robinson at the helm. In his post match interview he says, "I love this group of players, they know that. I've not been this proud since Oxford won their first Champions League. I thought Fodden was excellent at right back, as was Jude Bellingham. But it was dangerous Dan Agyei coming on late to play 7th right back made all the difference. I've been saying for years that right back was his natural position and now I've been proved right. But it's nor about me, this us for the players, for the fans, for the country, and for football as a whole. I got a bit emotional seeing Sam Long lift the trophy, the boy has been with me for years and if he keeps this up, I might let him have the no.2 shirt next year. But he'll have stiff competition from Mason Greenwood and Dean Henderson who has been a sensation since I got him to swap goal keeping for right back!"

And then you woke up!!

Surely the last 'Proper' No 8 that we had was Graham Atkinson?
Yes, think you're right.
During the 73-74 season Graham was pretty much done. Then John Fleming and Billy Jeffrey came into the side as his replacement and we saw the end of the 'conventional' no.8 and the emergence of the modern attacking midfielder.

OK, interesting - what was the main difference?

Inside forwards would play much closer to the centre forward on both sides. I suppose the 'in the hole' role now would have been an inside forward and the other inside forward became more withdrawn. Not massive differences really but football did seem more about scoring than worrying about letting them in!!

So, was speaking to a couple of Hearts fans last night.

They said that Sean was absolute garbage for them when he first signed and it wasn't until he moved from midfield to right-back that they started to see what a player he could be.

Perhaps we should try moving him from midfield to right-back next season in that case then, may have found a gem.

Interesting.
Some on here think that Clare is clearly not a right back and can't play there.

Played a bunch of games at right back, looked crap.

Played a bunch of games further forward, looked much better.

Played half a season in midfield at Burton, got good reports.

Say what you see. Isn’t that complex.

Absolutely wouldn't deny any of that.

Was interesting to hear Hearts fans say exactly the opposite though, and it was them who brought the subject up.

Maybe but the Heats fan presumably said what he saw and maybe neither are totally right or wrong.

Indeed, can’t discount it, but I think it can’t equally be used to rubbish what we’ve seen with our own eyes of him in a yellow shirt. Not suggesting you did that, for clarity, I was responding to someone else. Although I would still question why we spent six figures on someone with a dozen or two games at right back anyway, and why the clubs he was at before Hearts didn’t see him that way. Still feels like a bit of a strange one. Hurried somehow. Bit rash.

On a broadly similar note, I used to deal with a Derby fanatic / ST holder a lot through work. After we signed Hanson he was shocked that we had started to claim he was a right back. Apparently Derby used him there a handful of times, but even in friendlies against lower league sides he got rinsed and looked out of his depth. He was a bit of a cult hero because whenever he featured for them he basically ran around the midfield and murdered everybody with horrific challenges. Anyone who went to the 3-3 at Scunthorpe, where we blew a 3-0 lead after an hour will remember him practically killing a man with a horrendous sliding challenge. Great fun.

They then said that presumably we just wanted him on the pitch for his set pieces, so were shoehorning him in. I told him he had never been near one in a yellow shirt that I could remember, let alone regularly, and he was stunned. “We only let him near the pitch because he was an absolute whizz with a dead ball. Who the hell have you got on them instead, and why is he playing at right back if it’s not purely to have him on the pitch to take them?!”

Always interesting to hear how players compare between clubs, and what seems to change or what different coaches see etc.
