International News India - Covid - The EU

You’ve avoided that question quite nicely there 😉.

The EEC was an excellent trade collaborative akin to the trade deal we have now. It showed countries can work together for collective advantage whilst maintaining independent executive power. The European Union significantly took on a significant number of executive responsibilities which went beyond what the EEC stood for.

Some people agree with that. Some people do not. It’s a personal preference. And it’s ok that people disagree . Then it’s just a case of which the majority prefer.

Brexit as a concept was vastly overhyped by both sides. Life goes on either way.

Really? So you are not aware of all the benefits of the Single Market? Lord Cockfield was the man behind the Single Market, which swept away frontiers. Restrictions on trade in goods, services, capital, skills.... Barriers that created great inefficiencies.

Meanwhile the supermarket shelves are empty of fruit and veg from the continent and we are living on tinned beans and turnips and whatever else we can grow here.

Why do you regurgitate that nonsense? Though, in Northern Ireland...

There wasn't ever going to be much of a problem importing food to the UK - after all, it's our government that decides what enters. It's just our exporters that are being screwed - and the people who used to consume the food we exported have found plentiful alternative supplies.

UK companies have set up new offices in the Netherlands and elsewhere on the continent. The people within the 27 EU nations are perfectly happy.

bizarre tangent.

but since you mention efficiencies, isn’t it great how free movement of labor drives down wages. Creates great corporate efficiency

Really?
What a 1 sided black an white view.
Many against Brexit suggested that food supplies in the UK would be badly affected. Many on here suggested (from the anti brexit propoganda) that aircraft wouldn't be allowed to land in the EU for a period of time.
Sure there was propaganda from both sides but what has happened to date has been nowhere near the catastrophe suggested.
And so far as the 'people within the 27 EU nations being perfectly happy). How on earth do you know?
There are plenty of articles suggesting that French and German experts to the UK have reduced significantly. The French seem unhappy about the fishing agreement.
In reality there will be people in the UK and the EU who will be worse off. That is inevitable. Overall though will there be any upside for the EU or the UK?

Of course most of the incoming lorries are being waved straight through at the moment, it is a deliberate policy currently to make the border look better and avoid incoming supply issues. When they start actually implementing the promised restrictions (if they ever do, it doesn't actually bother them so that may quietly go away) things may get worse.

The aircraft thing was a real possibility, they managed to negotiate a deal for that (unlike a proper deal on things like financial services - of which 40% of our £130billion 1.1million people employing FS sector business is with Europe - lots of this has moved to Europe. Strange that a £1bn fishing industry took up more time, effort, and indeed mentions in the deal (16 v 6) than a £130billion business)

Exports in both directions are down. Not good for anyone.

France may be unhappy with the fish deal, but our fisherman are far more unhappy with no deal being made by the government to continue access to Norwegian waters (as they had under the EU). That lack of access is going to kill a big section of the industry, one trawler (Kirkella) which catches enough fish to make up 10% of the total chip shop use in the UK (12 tonnes per catch, up to 780 tonnes per trip) will not leave port for the rest of 2021.

Indian delegation visiting uk. Some of them have tested positive for Covid-19. What the F are they being allowed into the uk for.

Nectarines delivered from Tesco last week we’re only marginally bigger than a golf ball... hmmmm, maybe it’s a sign 🙄

Again totally one sided comments.
So absolutely everything is bad?

I would have put a lot of money on the aircraft landing issue never happening. It was absolute nonsense (unless the EU wanted to be spiteful). It was scaremongering in my view.

How many of the 1.1m employed by the FS services have moved to Europe (you said 'lots ')

You say about EU spite. The UK government dogma is causing enough self harm, ie the lack of a fishing deal with Norway to replace the one we were in via EU has pretty much shut down a swathe of our fishing industry, and the fingers have been firmly pointed at David Frost's refusal to negotiate.

The FS orgs aren't giving exact figures for employees, only assets.

You say only bad. What have been the positives that have actually happened due to Brexit?

It really isn't that one sided in my view.
France have threatened to cut off all electricity in Jersey. So that is French dogma?
I am sure that there will be some positives in coming out of the EU. It has a lot of corruption ( the lack of the signing off of the accounts is not good). Loads of waste. Lack of democratic balances (why does the EU Commission have so much power)
EU dogma seems at time to ignore what the public want (at least Barnier accepted that the UK leaving the EU should send a big message as to their mistakes)
But economically there will inevitably be some downsides.

Yes it is French dogma, they have vastly over-reacted (not the first time), but to be honest the way the Jersey fishing rights has been handled is poor. I would be pissed off if the first I knew about reduced fishing rights was when I got my new license with no notice too.

Is the alleged "EU Corruption" different from Tory ministers giving their relatives/mates/neighbours preferential access to millions in contracts?

The EU Commission actually has relatively little power since the Treaty of Lisbon.

"EU dogma seems at time to ignore what the public want" - just the EU? It covers a collective of states covering 400 million people. There will be decisions that don't please all,
