Looks like we are in the poo again in Perth. Notable contributions from Stoneman and now Malan but surely it’s time for a new opener to replace Cook? Failed again with just 7 and outfoxed by Starc. Thoughts?

Vince did his usual. He wasn't a test cricketer in his first go around, still isn't now. At least Baristow is batting in the correct position now and Malan continues to almost look a test cricketer. Ditto Stoneman

His body language is a bit off. He just looks like he wants to be at home, which is understandable!

Just read that Stokes hit 93 off 47 balls in an NZ 20/20 match. I believe his “alleged” assault case and subsequent omission from the squad triggered the negative feelings about this tour. I still don’t understand why the authorities are taking so long to determine what if any action will be brought against him.

Wow, when I woke up this morning, I thought same old England, messing it up, checked at lunch time and very surprised and happy!

Finally, someone stepped up and put up a serious score. Much respect to Malan for getting it done.

Now he and/or Bairstow need to go on and score big tomorrow. 500+ on the board and we could get back in these Ashes.......

Moeen is having a quietly putrid series. If he's not fit, rest him and let him get better. At the moment, he's not providing much of anything. Sadly.

Oh dear... Last 6 wickets went for 35. The first time we have made 400+ but in reality nowhere near enough. We needed 500+.

As most of us thought before the series had started, their attack is simply a different class from ours. Add in Smith v Root's performance and it is I guess no surprise. Now Overton has a cracked rib.

Cook will I guess retire at the end of the series. I can understand why England wanted him there especially based on Vince, Stoneman and Malan being so suspect before the series started.

A tough first away series for Root to captain

Simon Hughes basically ripped the bowlers to shreds earlier on on TMS. While they don't have the extra mph, they didn't try much different either to make life difficult. Can see Anderson and Cook both going at the end of the series. One voluntarily, the other dropped to give someone else a chance

I feel really sorry for Strauss as well. Has had to deal with some of the idiots in the squad and now his wife is very ill.

I can't see Anderson going with a summer in English conditions to come. Also, wasn't he the no.1 bowler in the world rankings at the end of the summer?

Trevor Bayliss has been alluding to shaking the team up for the good of everyone going forward - I can only imagine how frustrated he is seeing the team so easily give up. Our senior pace bowlers have looked meek and it's been down to an all rounder in his 2nd test with a rib injury to be the hardest bowler to play against. Anderson is a very good one trick pony at the moment. And the trick is thousands of miles away in a stable for Christmas.

This team has not played near to its potential. I'd look at playing Crane, look at getting Mark Wood back into the team. Our bowling cannot be any more meh than it already is

...and then we can look at our batting :( Malan has stepped up, Bairsrow as well. Poor series from Root but he'll bounce back. The rest of them? Lot of changes to come.

problem with Cricket is those behind selecting the national team seem to apply a set of unique rules and regs that elsewhwere in the world were deemed outdated in the 1950s

Yup. I'm chuffed for Malan. He's got on with his job quietly and the century showed he's learnt in his time as a test match cricketer. Stoneman has been fine, not great, but fine. Vince should be taken to the test match knackers yard with Ballance. As for everything else. Sheesh. I do wonder if Mooen's mental frailties have been exposed on this tour and do we gain with a leg spinner what we lose with batting.

I'm not sure of Jennings but it seems he's had a decent tour with Lions. The rest. It's lots of young blokes still learning their trade. I suppose with 4 more years to another trip to Aus, and with Stokes coming back in, now is the time to start again.

Agree. We have to start looking at players who can't just play at home but can play in Australia, India and Sharjah.
We have to try Crane and Wood. Then maybe Jennings/ Hameed (if fit), maybe Livingstone.

We have a backbone. Root, Stokes, Bairstow. Malan. But as usual the bowling is the huge challenge
