Ribeiro

Thanks for this - very interesting and perhaps a reminder to those who scream abuse at players that they are only human and are dealing with difficult issues like everyone else.

Still not sure if he’s part of our coaching set-up despite that article although his contract continuing until the Summer still (rather than being settled) might suggest so.

Ribeiro seems universally liked by those in the game so he’s clearly a good sort. All the best to him.

At one of the games recently he was at the back of SSU with a laptop. Not sure if he was doing media work or some sort of match analysis for the club?

Interesting read. I wish him all the best for the future. Seems a decent and switched on bloke.

Wish him all the best. Still think the club's support of him could have got a bigger mention if I'm being honest.

As long as he wasn’t playing Minecraft, that’s fine.

It’s a shame for both the club and Ribs that this was the outcome. Thought Ribs was a class act but unfortunately his career cut short too soon. Good luck in the future Chris.

I always enjoyed listening to his post match interviews. Always, insightful, articulate and passionate. The club will be missing a massive trick if he isn’t offered a place on the coaching staff somewhere.

I think when Pep was still here he mentioned that something had been offered. For how long or whether it still stands now that Pep has gone, who knows..

Comes across as a very introspective and compassionate man. Real shame for him and his family, but it sounds like he's approaching it all in a mature and capable way. All credit to him.

However. Brave as he was playing through the pain, might the team not have been better off if he had made it known to the powers that be that, in his words, "The pain was debilitating me, getting worse and worse with each match, to the point where in the last couple of games I have no idea how I was still playing." I appreciate he wanted to play, having been out for the entirety of the previous season, but maybe the team as a whole might have benefitted if e.g. Tiendalli had been put in earlier, and been allowed to pick up some match fitness, or if CC had had the opportunity to gain more first-team experience. As much as I sympathise with his position, I can't help but think that maybe his 'powering through the pain' was actually a bit of a selfish move in the broader scheme of things...

(I can't remember if his performances were tailing off by the end, so if they weren't, and he was still playing as well as he was without any niggles, ignore me, and I concede the point is unfair)

ttg17 post has put another perspective on it. However much we respect Ribeiro, and we do, he should have never attempted to play with that amount of pain. He would have failed a fitness test before setting foot on the pitch. Why do it. Clearly a passenger. I have said it more than once before. He looked bulked up and off the pace. Never put your team mates under extra pressure. He must have known it was a matter of weeks before he "cried enough". Decades ago you had pain killing injections...not today. Bit disappointed in what he said, to be honest.

Really liked the look of him when he played and, in my opinion, it's no coincidence things on the pitch deteriorated once he had to retire. I think it's pretty harsh to criticise him for not retiring earlier.

But then again, this is Yellows Forum, so it's to be expected.

What are you talking about? How many games did he play for us? Two year contract, out, for what, fifteen months? Another Capaldi.

I can't blame anyone for trying to extend their career in football for as long as possible, a job most of us can only dream of having and probably a very tough thing to walk away from. The criticism for not retiring earlier seems a bit sanctimonious IMHO.

It was, typically of Ribeiro, a very honest and forthright interview. I would bet he’s only admitted to doing what 95% of retiring professionals do. As the saying goes: You’re a long time retired.

If you are not fit, and I mean NOT fit, then there is no more to say. I'm out.

Do you want somebody on the pitch TOTALLY unfit? EVEN coming up to retirement. I would not.

An injured Ribeiro was still 10 times the player of that donkey Tiendali.

As others have said, it is such a tough decision to retire - especially at an age when you should be in your prime as a footballer. He clearly felt or hoped he had something to offer the team and was desperate to play - particularly after missing so much of the previous season. Supporters vilify players for not showing commitment or bravery and yet when a player does exactly this and tries to play through the pain barrier he is criticised for doing that.
