Hey

Do any of you have a folding bike? Looking at getting a lower end one, not an expensive Brompton!

Just looking for views

No, but have been investigating. As ever, you get what you pay for so buy the best you can afford and from a reputable dealer. Brompton are expensive for a reason and used ones hold their price well.

Yes that's true, I don't need light weight, it's now to be able to fold it up smaller than a bike.

I'm looking at around £300.

Summertown Cycles still going? Get yourself up there and cut a deal. :)

With a £300 budget I’d look at used. The thing about Brompton is the folding mechanism is unsurpassed. So get an old one (eBay) it will still be good and there are loads of good bike service people who would fettle it for you. A 10 year old Brompton for that money would be a great buy.

On eBay they all seem to be going for £500+

I have one over here in Malaysia. Brand is Mongoose.

Cost me around 900MYR which is less than 200GBP.

Look at Amazon and Ebay.

You’ll struggle with £300 even used to be honest. Bikes have become a lot more popular since covid and second hand are selling for far more than they would normally.

Depending on where you work I’d opt for using the bike to work scheme and spending a bit more. Walton St Cycles, Summertown and Warlands all do cycle to work and are likely to have folding bikes.

For cheap your best bet in Oxford is probably going to be Cycle King on the Cowley Road https://cycleking.co.uk/specialist-bikes/folding-bikes.html

I’d always agree that you should spend as much as you can afford. The reason a lot of people give up with cycling is because they end up with issues with gear shifting etc. and it becomes a pain/frustrating to ride. Ultimately findings it’s way to a shed where it becomes unusable after a couple of years.

There’s a few Facebook groups (buy and sell cycling Oxfordshire) that are worth a look too.

There are a few £300 from Cycloalaytics on Cowley Rd, I don't care for the weight, it's just the bulkiness

I have experience of a few fold up bikes and would now only consider a Brompton. If you could stretch your budget to get a second hand one, that's what I would recommend.

They are superior to the other folding bikes I have used in every way - quality, longevity of parts, easier to fold, less bulky when folded, lighter, available accessories (clip on bags, folding pedals, etc)

Can't find any second hand

My wife bought her folding bike a few years ago from gumtree, there are few on there

What do you need a folding bike for? My roadies can pack small enough to go in any back seats with the quick release wheels off... and they're faster :)

Which bike was it?
It's a dahon, she was coaching at falcon canoe club at Donnington bridge so she would ride up and down the footpath, rather than use on the road,it fitted in the back of her yaris ok, it was second-hand when we bought it from a student who going back to the states, £120 as far as I can remember, you going to fit 2 child's seats on it ,or ride around the quads?
