So all these migrants nipping across the Channel in various dinghies etc as featured on the BBC news...........
1. They are leaving a safe country. Last time I checked France was "safe" barring Covid issues.
2. They have travelled through several safe countries.
3. They, generically, have no documents so we can`t check them in any way shape or form.
4. They are entering illegally.

There are proper, legitimate and legal routes they could take and would be welcomed, we are a country of migrants after all.

So why are we not just detaining them, as they are entering illegally without documentation, then loading them onto a ferry and shipping them back to France?

Discuss.

As far as I am aware, illegal immigrants have to be repatriated to their original country - not the last one they passed through on the way.

Also discuss how easy it will be to send them back to France once we are no longer anything to do with the EU?

It can take upto 6 months to process a request for asylum. Also our relationship with France is fairly important so pissing them off might not be a good idea.

People stupidly believe a life in the U.K. is better than Europe. Fair play to us!! We’ve absolutely outsold ourselves!!!

I am interested in the route they travel, my wife’s family are from a small French village on the French/Italian border. Whenever I drive into Italy my car is checked when I cross the border (this is in the mountains). When I cycle out there and come back through Italy into France I used to quite often pass a lot of African (I assume Eritrean) migrants who would walk to the border and then be refused entry.

Maybe they should do a campaign where they recruit a load of people who have lived in better countries than this one to deter them?!

It’s not easy now, in fact almost impossible, unless caught in French international waters.
Also France clearly make it clear that these people aware not welcome in France.
Strange when the French have a far more generous welfare state.

So they could, theoretically, begin the application process in France as there is a legal & legitimate method.
They chose not to so travel & arrive illegally.
If a firmer line was taken with batting them back then the message may get through.
By all means migrate for whatever reason but do so legitimately.

It's been going on for months and outside of Farage getting into trouble for going to Dover, the Govt have just let it happen and there has been little media outcry until this week. The stable door has been left open and we've effectively let the French navy escort them over the channel.

What are we paying the French £14m for?

Sounds like Tony Abbott’s having some influence beyond the trade portfolio. Good luck with that.

Bringing back the Victorian prison hulks, sorry..... out of service ferries..... as floating immigration detention centres was mooted.

And an "anti shipping" fence of some description ..........another slightly bonkers idea.

Yes that anti shipping fence was basically a plan to sink them.

Big boats as well.........

So the crew knew they were there but carried on until they reached the destination of most gullibilty.
One assumes, having committed piracy they will be returned to their country of origin forthwith?
Not before they have suffered the full might of the legal system and been tried for their actions!

Then sent to a nice warm prison with 3 meals a day, TV, library, plenty of exercise and opportunities to learn how to claim benefits and free housing. Or, they can be sent home, should they wish.

Or they could await bail before disappearing into the modern slavery network. Which is sad. If we were harder on people taking unofficial migration routes (by sentencing and deporting properly) there would be less suffering at the lower end of society, and fewer people risking their lives to make the journey.

I’m sure they will be welcomed with open arms, put in to the community, given a place to live, and start benefits immediately. We are soft in this country.

They should of put Priti Patel on the container, took the boat out to rough water in the Atlantic. Then the executioner would make them walk the plank ?‍☠️
