National News End Child Food Poverty

We've no idea what Rashford is or isn't giving. He's certainly putting his time. I'm sure he's been making donations. but that's not the point he;'s been giving a voice to people who don't have one. The government could solve this overnight. As others have said this is a pittance compared to the the money central government has spent elsewhere.

and those premiership players all pay PAYE, unlike the likes of Rees Mogg and co.

investing in people or infrastructure is the best single thing a country can do.

I agree that the community spirit has been amazing people from all over the country coming together. But how much better if the government found ways to harness that energy.

Wonder why old bashamwonderland mentioned Lenny Henry just then? Is there something he doesn't like about Lenny?
What a weird point to make, if you're trying to make this a race thing. By your same, warped logic I'm vindicated because I keep pushing for Agyei to play in our squad.

Obviously it doesn't work like that, but your over simplified and grotesque logic has a life of its own.

Can’t see any grounds to criticise Rashford, he is a young lad who has taken the time to fight for something he believes in and while wealthy he isn’t Jeff Bezos and he can’t afford to feed every child in the country, but while most of us in his position and at his age would be out taking advantage of it getting off our nuts and playing the field he is trying to do something decent. If Rashford was my son I would be proud of him.

Don’t get the argument about children going hungry because their parents are dickheads, not the child’s fault is it? We don’t punish anyone because a family member does something wrong so why withhold food from children?

This week I have done a couple of days working away, gone straight into 12 hour night shifts then followed it up by working the weekend, all to pay for my familys Christmas. Nobody really wants to pay tax but if I have to I would rather it went towards looking after the vulnerable like kids than some of the other shite we waste it on.

Why did you single out Lenny Henry then, I wonder?

here are all the Comic Relief presenters this century.

Well of the people on that list he has presented it the most times...

Add to that the fact that he, unlike any of the others on that list (to my knowledge) was literally knighted for his services to charity. He does have a reputation, you might say, for asking for money for causes.

Alesha Dixon, Clara Amfo, Romesh Ranganathan, Reggie Yates are all also previous BAME presenters who I didn't use as examples.

You look silly.

Out of interest here please state the answer to your question.

Lenny Henry is a founder of comic relief, and synonymous with it.

Suggestions of racism in this case just aren't founded, the intention was pretty clear in the original post.

I've no idea

What he wrote was
"Excellent to see the public rallying behind "their own" without the need for a BBC 1 charity appeal evening, hosted by Lenny Henry."

the sentence works perfectly well without the last 4 words. I wondered why he chose to add it. he could have said. "'actually it's not about Lenny Henry" or "I can't stand the bloke". Just the way you think Agyei should play up front...

Anyway let's not get distracted by why bashamwonderland introduced Lenny Henry into the conversation, and get back to why it's important for children to go hungry

Yeah better back down and change the subject, now you've made a fool of yourself.

I just asked why you mentioned Lenny Henry. You still haven't answered. I'm sure you have a good explanation. You just haven't chosen to share yet.

Meanwhile apologies for supplying more facts about how incomes of almost everyone (except the richest 30 percent have declined in the last ten years)

See post 104 and then feel free to apologize on here or by DM. Or alternatively, make your signature move of of ignoring the argument when you realise you were wrong.

With a post like that you haven't exactly come out of this sounding great.
Better than sounding like a racist. I'm sure you'd also put up a robust defence if he accused you of something equally unpleasant.

When you’re currently rebranding Highways England (which was already rebranded from the Highways Agency in 2015) for around £7million, it’s less than ideal timing when you’re also telling people there’s no money for kids to eat during half term.

Also, pretty laughable to see a few people online claiming we can’t feed kids because they’ll be paying for it for the rest of their lives. “Sorry little Jimmy, we couldn’t spend £20 feeding you for a week, you’d have been paying for it for the next 30 years. It would’ve been mean to have fed you.”

That is just ridiculous. Does it actually make any difference if they are the Highways Agency / Highways England / National Highways? Let's wonder if there might be anything else to spend seven million quid on during a national emergency?

I'd be tempted to look at who is benefitting financially from this 'rebranding' - it sure isn't the taxpayer...

Always follow the money......It is clear that quite a bit of spaffing over Covid has been spaffed in the same general direction.

As Ben B posted this morning.......

"To the fine upstanding citizen who has vandalised my office this weekend, scrawling abuse on my windows:
1) a bit rich of anyone to complain about my actions whilst simultaneously committing criminal damage.
2) your actions only serve to add additional cost and waste for the taxpayer
3) whatever you think of me, it's inevitably my staff who find and have to deal with this. They deserve to feel safe at work and not be the subject of abuse. Their whole purpose is to help people, they do not deserve this.
Whatever some may want to believe, nobody goes in to politics wanting to do harm. We do it because we believe in something or want to change something. That's why I campaign relentlessly in support of working class kids and improving their life chances.
Nobody has voted not to help kids this week. Nobody has reduced or cut support for kids through this pandemic. If you want FACTS - they are quite important - we've increased Universal Credit, extended eligibility for FSM and provided them over the summer, increased school budgets, given £63m to Councils to identify and target families who are in need, and handed out grants to thousands of charities to help in the same way.
I appreciate that communication of those facts has been poor this week, but that does not make them any less true. I freely admit that I've personally said something stupid this week, it was an error and I've removed and explained it. It doesn't actually make me evil.
Sending threatening message to my wife online and targeting my staff is totally unacceptable, regardless of what you may think I've done. The Police have been informed."

So if UC has been increased, eligibility for FSM extended and £63 million gone to Councils .......why are the local councils not filling the gap of holiday food if central Government has provided the money?
PS: Our half term has finished.

This should answer your question about the £63m. There are many others making the same point, that the £63m isn't for FSM and is pretty much gone.
