due to pandemic many businesses are insisting on Cashless transactions for obvious reasons

IMO the possibility of a totally cashless society (in the UK) is concerning to say the least

add to the cut n pasted from elsewhere overview , that those in lower paid employment will no longer receive their own tips/ gratuities for service etc ...

This is dangerous, very dangerous. You may want to believe this is “for your own Safety” but . . . A cashless society means no cash. . Zero . . .

It doesn’t mean mostly cashless and you can still use a ‘wee bit of cash here & there’.

Cashless means fully digital, fully traceable, fully controlled. I think those who support a cashless society aren’t fully aware of what they are asking for.
A cashless society means:
* No more tuck-away cash for those preparing to leave domestic violence.
* No more purchases off marketplace unless you want to risk bank transfer fraud.
* No more garage sales.
* No more cash donations to hungry homeless you pass.
* No more cash slipped into the hands of a child from their grandparent.
* No more money in birthday cards.
* No more piggy banks or tooth fairy for your child.
* No more selling bits & pieces from your home that you no longer want/need for a bit of cash in return.
* Less choices of where you purchase based on affordability.
What a cashless society does guarantee:
* Banks have full control of every single cent you own.
* Every transaction you make is recorded.
* All your movements & actions are traceable.
* Access to your money can be blocked at the click of a button when/if banks need ‘clarification’ from you which could take weeks, a hundred questions answered & five hundred passwords.
* If your transactions are deemed in any way questionable, by those who create the questions, your money will be frozen, ‘for your own good’.
And before anybody slams this post ... don’t go shooting the messenger ..
I’m sharing it because maybe we all need to take off our blinders for a second.
Forget about cash being dirty. Cash has been around for a very, very long time & it gives you control over how you trade with the world. It gives you independence.
If you are a customer, pay with cash.
If you are a shop owner, remove those ridiculous signs that ask people to pay by card. Cash is a legal tender, it is our right to pay with cash. But banks are making it increasingly difficult to use cash & that has nothing to do with a virus.
Stop believing everything you hear on the TV. Almost every single topic in today’s world is tainted with corruption & hidden agendas.
Politics & greed is what is wrong with the world; not those who are trying to alert you to the reality.
Please pay with cash & please say no to a cashless society while you still have a choice.

What concerns me is that it also allows businesses and states to financially cripple those that they disagree with. We have already seen this online with YouTube, Patreon and PayPal where individuals have had their accounts blocked or deleted because their politics do not align with those corporate entities.

Similarly by going completely electronic we are allowing businesses to know exactly where we are at all times, what we are doing, who we are doing it with and it will be predicting what we will be doing in the future. There will be no escape from "the machine".

no more tax dodging cash-in-hand work ...
no more funding drug dealers ...
no more cash money laundering ...

You can use bitcoin or other cryptocurrency if you want an anonymous alternative to physical money...

no more funding drug dealers ...
Most drug dealers have been cashless for years. They use handheld card readers to move money around. You can see multiple deals a day taking place on the forecourt of the Shell garage on the London Road in Bicester alone, and many more taking place along Gavray Drive. They don’t even try to hide it - saw a car pull in to said garage only a few weeks ago, driver got out with card reader clearly in hand, jumped into a parked car, back into his car 60 seconds later and away. And if you’ve ever visited a hand car wash operated primarily by Macedonian’s or Romanian’s, they’re almost certainly a front for overseas mafia money laundering. Whether you pay using a £10 note or tap your card on a card reader won’t change that - they’ll just set up dozens if not hundreds of different cards and devices to move it all in one way or the other. It’ll easily be skirted around.

That’s before I go into what you can do using cryptocurrency. If you know how to use it you can order a handgun and a brick of cocaine to your front door, and it won’t be detected. The dark web is an interesting place to visit.

when there's an internet issue , which are frequent , if youre 100% cashless , you'll find yourself up the proverbial creek with no paddle , .........and no way of actually paying for one either

Mobile App ?

Mobile App ?
with no internet to transfer the cashless transaction ? or the outlet stocking said paddle has an issue with thier card reader, then what? .... yep that'd work well :sneaky:

Im not anti cashless payments per se..... even set me self up with the way n means.... however a totally cashless society, meaning absolutely, totally zero cash anywhere is a worrying and concerning route to go down.... see the cut n pasted overview in the opening post

I think you are being a bit ultra conspiracy paranoid if you think we will go 100% cashless. However increasing use of electronic payment will affect people, particularly people who aren't good at managing money and the poor. For instance a mate's brother in law has to be given an allowance to spend by the wife as he can't manage money himself.

How about electronic payment whereever possible, cash when absolutely necessary?

Compared to six months ago, i've probably used a cash machine two or three times, everything else is now contactless. Even the fruit and veg stall on the market takes contactless.

A reduction in the actual number of physical banks will drive this, I have been with the same bank for decades, first branch closed down building now a cat place, the last one closed a few months ago, I only used it to pay in cheques and order euros at for holiday, did all my other money business on line,so for me to use a branch I would have to go to the city centre or Templars square, hardly an incentive, cash isn't the most suitable for some people

Im not anti cashless at all, it is ok, where absolutely necessary.... Ive had a Paypal a/c for some time( many years) now, and, even being a luddite with technology have set myself the way n means of cashless payment (during the lockdown)

I agree more or less with your middle sentence above, re cashless payment when necessary, and good old fashioned hard cash the rest of the time :sneaky:

I often use cash ATMs.... out of preference I like to, where I can, to pay by cash ..... think it may be part of me being of/over a certain age and harbouring a suspicion of all technology , especially that involving my money, outlook

Correct me if i'm wrong but in the scene you present you're talking of payments/transfers whilst at home which means you're already in a cashless mindset situation..if in the store they can read your phone? if presented with a situation of card reader not working it's only a question of trying again when it is.
i think the past few months have shown that we can adapt to certain situations like not having to use supermarkets to purchase our essentials etc and i don't think a cashless society will exist.

Anyway the days when people had a pay packet in their hand did me no favors as i once found an unopened one in the street and the Bastar* had had 3 days off sick :)

nope, consider yourself corrected ;) .... I use cashless ( & paypay) when its necessary ... but prefer cash when I can
Ive not set up a phone option to pay with, that's about ten steps far too far for me..... I only during the lockdown set myself up with a debit or credit ( I dunno which) to carry out cashless payments with when absolutely necessary

Glad that youve said you don't think a cashless society will exist :)

Was told about someone who was fined £1000 for breaking the isolation rules when coming back from holiday....got caught by going to tesco and paying by card which gave info back to the authorities......smacks of big brother 1984 to me,i know people will say that if you dont break the law you shouldnt worry about it.....but i do worry where this is all going.

Well if you were told about it it must be true.?

I had cause to venture into town, had to get some anti-histamines.
Popped mask on, went into Boots, selected item from shelf & went to pay.
Handed over a note to the lady who was behind the screen, wearing a visor and gloves.

From the look on her face you would have thought I dropped my trousers and :poop: on the counter.
Asked me to pay by card as it is the "preferred method of transaction".
I declined and reminded her that cash is still perfectly legal.

Thinking about it on the way home I was wondering how much will be saved in not having to move/bank/transport physical cash.
No more bank branches.
No more Securicor wagons, secure buildings, safes etc,
No more manufacturing notes & coins.

Just digital transactions..............................
