Ex Player Rob Dickie

Rob Dickie had a very good season , must admit i had my doubts at the end of the last one, still not sure if the move to a championship club is right at this moment, i think another season with us to see if he can progress further my be better for him, he is still young so has time on his side.

He gave us his one more year when he signed a 12-month extension last July, which stopped him walking for free this summer. He’s done the right thing by the club already in signing that and excelled at this level this past season - what has L1 got left to teach him after 2.5 years of playing in it?

Unfortunately the time has come. Just hope all concerned can play a blinder and get that fee as high as possible.

Where ever he goes (does it matter?) the club must get the best deal possible. Whether that be an outright large sum of money or some hefty add on's, or even both!

I honestly think Dickie will go straight to the Premiership. He's better than Nelson who is now a regular in a team that nearly went up. Best centre half we've had since Matt Elliott. Pre Covid, I would have thought £4-5m.Now, who would know. If his agent is doing his job, he'll get him to a lower/mid level Prem team.

Better than Nelson based on what? I agree he’s good, but I don’t think he’s absolutely proven that he’s better than Curtis Nelson.

He might not be a better player but is a better person. Nelson refused to sign a contract extension which would have enabled us to recoup the money we laid out on him.
I dont really get this. Forgive me if I’m wrong, my memory is starting to play tricks on me! - but from what I remember, Nelson had a nasty injury that kept him out for a while but came back to help us over the line to safety with some giant performances when in all probability, he knew he wouldn't be staying and could've coasted. He risked another injury for the cause and, for me, left owing us nothing and could hold his head high.

I thought he had a very good game in the playoff second leg the other night btw..

Correct

We are still a club that depends upon the sale of players. We were done over by the size of the development fee paid for him and it would have been nice to at least recoup that. He came back from injury to perform his duty as a contracted player. Plus he was putting himself in the shop window as a soon-to-be free agent. I stand by my opinion.

The Nelson contract situation was well know. Everyone knew that he would leave so Oxford should have sold him the summer before he left. It was Nelsons prerogative to refuse a contract.

Rob Dickie vs Curtis Nelson....
Heading - even
Tackling - even
Timing - Curtis
Passion for the cause - Rob
Distribution - Rob
Less mistakes - Curtis
Less bookings - Curtis
Loyalty - Rob
Premiership credentials - Rob
Transfer fee value - Rob

The dream would be to have both Rob and Curtis defending our goal, the best defensive pairing in league 1 and the championship and both capable of the step up into the big league...

it’s Rob Dickie for me, he’s an absolute warrior, never gives up and will run through brick walls to help the team he plays for........!

Nelson was a good player but I don't think he ever had a full season of being consistent at the top of his game, in my opinion Dickie this season was better than him.

In Nelson's last season he was hit and miss going into the new year, it wasn't after the fleetwood game (where he got both barrels from a fair few in the crowd after fleetwoods 2 goals) that he started to knuckle down and was a rock till the end of the season.

Nelson played alot of games with Dickie and it wasn't really a partnership that flourished, Dickie has looked alot more comfortable on the right with Moore or Mous.

Dickie and Dunkley is a partnership I would like to see, the two best defensive headers we've had for a long time and both comfortable with the ball at their feet.

Absolutely agree re Dunk’s headers. People always complained that he never knew where the ball was going. Nope. But he always got his head to it, as does Dickie. Someone else’s job to sort it out after that.

I don’t think we’ve had a more aerially dominant centre back than Dunkley since Elliott. The man was a colossus. Dickie wins his fair share but Dunkley would smash through a tank to win a header, which is why he scores a good amount of goals for a centre back. Far more ruthless at winning the ball in the air than any centre back I’ve seen play for us this century.

Had a bad injury, Chey, but am sure there will be a host of clubs ready to take him on a free in the coming months. That’s going to be a heck of a freebie for somebody.

Was a bit of a richard dunne at the time though...you were always waiting for that 1 Rick a match and hoping it wasn't decisive

As much as I liked Dunkley, he made a lot of errors. For example, watch the highlights at the tip when we won 2-1. He was all over the place, and there was always that fear when his next error was coming.
Nelson gave a way a lot of free kicks penalties with poor timed tackles.
I’d take Dickie over any of them.

Nelson on his day was great, but he had a couple of poor showings from memory in his last season at the club. I can remember at least one match where he made a mistake or two and I thought at the time he didn't care, was going through the motions and running his contract down. Towards the end of that season though he did step it up to his credit, but in terms of consistency throughout the season, the better player for me is Dickie.
