International News Covid-19 .....

How did exactly is this new regulation up north going to be policed? Or is it just being seen to be doing something?

It’s not just the Asian community, although they have been particularly bad which explains why certain areas have been hit hardest, a lad at work and 39 friends hired a house out last weekend, spent the whole weekend of their nuts then all returned to work and homes around the country, he told me he thought it was all over anyway. He is probably not far from wrong, other than wearing masks while shopping

Delusional or what???

Do you mean that the pandemic is 'all over' or it's all over for people showing any sort of good sense while it is going on?

The first isn't true (of course) and one of the causes of it is the second!

So planned Aug 1 relaxation changes have been postponed 2 weeks. Including wedding receptions still being limited.

Pilot sporting events cancelled.

I am a vulnerable 76yr old who has been shielding at home since the beginning of March. Even now I am worried about venturing out under any conditions due largely to the actions of idiots such as your workmate.
Furthermore I find it reprehensible that you did not, at least, share this information with your employer or even share it with the appropriate authorities.

What @westyorkshireexile said ^^^^ its the same in Leicester.......... but you can`t say it because it is considered "racism". It`s not, it`s a fact.
Say it as it is, people are dying.
Its the tip toeing around ethnicity that contributed to failure to deal with child abuse in Rotherham so there is no excuse to not overcoming that ‘difficult’ issue now, and shouldn’t have been then either.

The Govt need to stop being so worried about offending people in areas who aren't doing their thing to minimise transmission and hit them with cold hard truths.

What is the point of wearing of a mask in my local supermarket down South where there are few cases of COVID, when idiots up North are persistently ignoring lockdown causing issues - idiots of whatever race/religion/whatever? There has to be more accountability, not soft touches

Not just Rotherham but several Mill towns in W Yorks.

The point of the mask is to stop it spreading in your locality.

We’re in a strange position here in Perth. We have no transmission here and life is appearing to turn back to normal apart from our closed borders. What I see in the rest of the country is outbreaks happening. In Melbourne effectively all of the current outbreaks come from a single source - a security guard at a quarantine hotel.
So, I realise that the same could happen here, and our guard is down at the moment, which is unsettling.

why should I worry about this? I’m a chemist/molecular biologist and I know people who are sequencing the genome of virus isolates to track transmission, and see how the virus is changing.

It seems fairly clear that lock down, as you might expect, is selecting for more infectious forms. So we are making it more likely that people will get the virus if exposed to it. At the same time we have to hope that it will become less deadly: there is no selective advantage to the virus to kill people because dead people can’t pass it on, but there is every advantage to it to be more infectious. An infectious virus that accidentally kills people is the worst case scenario. I’m hoping that doesn’t come to pass.

So in the words of essexyellows, wash your hands, keep your distance, and don’t be responsible for potentially exposing vulnerable people. Don’t be paranoid, but also don’t just get bored and impatient and do the wrong thing.

Starmer moaning these changes are last minute, but didn't he moan when the government announced changes giving weeks notices as too long away and needing implemented immediately?!
I did snigger at Starmer's consistent flip flopping in recent months... He started with school opening okey cokey and hasn't stopped since

Whatever happened to the covid risk level thing? Starmer does sort of have a point, the govt just swan in and make announcements. Imo the local authorities should be the ones in charge now, we saw how effective they are at containment etc with the Salisbury chemical attack, it must be pretty frustrating for these public health officials being overruled by Hancock.

Im sure the names Corbyn and starmer get mentioned more than Boris. What is the fascination with what the opposition say? It reminds me of the late 80s when ministers would start every sentence with “The last labour government ...”.
Focus on the actual government!

Andy Burnham aside, there’s been another negative response to the timing of the announcement, not just from Starmer but others in positions of influence but I thought the Imam of Batley mosque was at the very least thoughtless and certainly provocative for questioning whether this same announcement would have been made on Christmas Eve.

They wouldn't do anything like this on Christmas eve, and people wouldn't comply if they did.
