International News Black Lives Matter

No, don`t buy that. There is opportunity for all.
If you choose to look for it, work for it and achieve not try taking a fast route to fast cash with drugs etc.
True poverty is very, very rare in this country and is normally accompanied by either a criminal record or health issues not skin colour.
Sure, everyone has 'opportunity'. But it ostensibly is not equivalent to all people. Even amongst individuals of the same race, a kid born and growing up in North Oxford with both parents working good jobs etc. is more likely to see superior opportunities to get a good job and live a 'good' life than a kid born to a single, alcoholic mum in Blackbird Leys, for example. I don't think any of us here would deny that. (Incidentally, I think introducing 'class' as a protected characteristic for the purposes of discrimination law in this country would be a fascinating thing for the legislature to consider. I'm not sure how you could define 'class' or how you could realistically implement any definition, but it does seem like a characteristic on which someone, especially in the UK, could be discriminated against.) So to pretend that just because some has 'opportunity' means everything that they do or that happens to them in their own life is entirely through fault on their part is disingenuous.

The problem with your second point for me is that it seems to imply that the reason that black people are more likely to be involved in "fast cash with drugs etc." is because they are black. If you extrapolate this to other statistics, it doesn't really work. In 2018, 9% of Black people were unemployed, the highest unemployment rate across all ethnic groups (more than double the national rate - 4% of the economically active population). Unless we're saying black people are inherently less employable than other ethnic groups (which would, I'm sure you agree, be a racist statement), there must be some more profound reason for their higher rates of unemployment. In 2017/18, 5.1% of Black students got 3 A grades or better, the lowest percentage out of the 6 broad ethnic groups, compared to the national average of 12.9%. Again, unless we're saying that black students are inherently less intellectually capable than students from other backgrounds, we need to look more deeply at why this is.

It's easy to link these things with poverty, and of course in many respects they inextricably are. But then we surely have to ask ourselves why so many black people are living in these poorer areas, have correspondingly fewer opportunities, and so are more likely to turn to crime.

Just looking at aerial shots of Abingdon and Oxford and see the number of tennis courts for example the private schools have compared to the local authority funded schools and then tell me with a straight face that that superior investment isn't replicated in the class room. There's opportunity and there's opportunity!

I assume you missed the word "white" out before you typed "people". Otherwise, that reads like you don't think black qualifies as "people".

In respect of this specific matter what are your suggesting the UK media do? Should it be running campaigns to change USA gun laws?
Provide a wider discussion on Black lives in the US and the more harsher daily reality of what happens day to day that doesn't involve blaming the Police, the endemic staleness of politics in US cities, not the slanted view of the the BLM Marxists and taking a knee.

A good example is NYC over the past few weeks - it sounds like a violent hellhole at the moment, Police are retiring and murders, the Mayor is out his depth and violence are up as the Policing is more passive. A classic situation for a journalist to look into don't you think? You can even do a compare/contrast with London. So much scope!

It's easier to report on Trump tho

So where are you getting your 'information' from?

I did read somewhere there was an upturn on murders this year, something like 45% higher, but in real figures the total was still only something like 50, so nothing like it was in the 90s.if you make the percentage your headline then it does sound significant, guess it depends on your agenda which way you decide to look at it.

Tbf, Trump is screwing up Coronavirus epically and sadly, keeps tweeting/retweeting controversial posts (ie. the White supremacist the other day), sacking anybody who disagrees with him, been impeached etc etc etc. But on the plus side he has an arrest warrant out for him from Iran.

I'm not doubting it . I don't have view point on it but would like to read up on it. If it's not being covered by the media, GB's complaint, where is he getting his info from?

I hope we're not 'taking the knee' friday. It's been done to death now. All lives matter.

"Sorry Dan, Marcus, Rob, and Malachi, but some folk are a bit bored of Black Lives Matter, so please don't kneel on Friday, even for the relatively short period of one solitary minute. It's very selfish of you to disregard the white people like that."

maybe we should take a knee for all the black lives taken in london throught murders etc but oh my mistake we cant do that because somehow they weren't rascist murderers so there not important are they .

Everywhere!

NYC
Plain clothes armed response units have been disbanded.

The same thing is replicating over many cities. While to be abundantly clear, not all deaths or crimes are solely black people, the impact of BLM is clear.

After the recent incident in Atlanta and the DA throwing the Policeman under the bus for re-election, parts of the city had no Police working in it all and morale is down and crime is up.
When it all kicked off in Baltimore in 2015 and Police were more passive, crime went up:
Let alone this in St Louis over the weekend
I'm sure you get my point. And then I am sure you can appreciate why BLM piffling on about defunding (but not defunding) the Police is having short term effects now and there will ripple further.

In inner cities, the majority of people affected are black people, such is the insanity of it all.
