General Best place to live in Oxfordshire?

Challenor rings a bell from the distant past. (any relation to Challenor, Gardiner in Oxford?) I'll look into that one. Thanks.

Used neville from challenor and sons on the first house I bought which was a newish build. They were slow and behind the times, nearly cost the chain to break as everyone was getting inpatient. Might be better now but when I bought the current house I used withy King and it was so easy and stress free.

With estate agents getting back into business, our house sale and purchase plans have moved forward again. Looking now at a place in Stanford in the Vale. Aside from a dodgy postcode (SN7 ) anything else anyone knows about the village and surrounding area? Looks like a straightforward 20 minute drive to Grenoble Road which is better than our current 90 minute run. Faringdon up the road a bit and across to Abingdon the other way.
The house is fitted out with data point sockets throughout but no fibre in the village so all copper wiring (archaic!) Also got a Mitsubishi Ecodan monobloc air source water heating system which is, allegedly, very efficient and eco friendly - all I know is there appears to be equipment everywhere for it including a water tank that looks as though NASA have been involved!

Stanford in the Vale is practically in the shadow of White Horse hill

does the house come with a very large flag pole? if not get 1 so you can that amazing crowd surfer fag made into a proper flag and fly it. Might ruffle a few feathers amongst the locals. ;)

We've already put a note on our list for the surveyor to check - how many fingers do the neighbours have on each hand?

The road between Wantage and SITV can flood quite significantly as I found out a few times commuting to work through there. Can't help you on anything else mind.

Ta for that, we had a look at the flood charts and did have some concerns. Developer has stated that they have no issues on site. We have seen that parts of Stanford can suffer from surface water on some roads - that is being addressed by the locals. Developer uses block paving with a "honeycomb" of drainage underneath. Sounds good on paper!

Stanford in the Vale has been located in Oxfordshire since 1974 ,after the redefining of Berkshire borders

Depends which part of Stanford in the Vale this house is, anywhere near the a417 I would give a miss due to the amount of lorrys going too and from the quarry. Plus as stated the road between Wantage and Stanford floods everytime we have alot of rain. Their is a Co op on the high Street but it's really expensive, so closest supermarket is sainsbury's in Wantage. Stanford a strange village to me, it has a lot of council houses and houses that are private are crammed in like they would be in a town but doesn't have the amenities like a town does. You might aswell look at Faringdon, you get much more value for money especially new builds and has more going for it. Alot of Oxford fans I know have moved to Faringdon so it's less full of scum fans.

We moved to Wantage from Oxford] when i retired 5 years ago, if you are retired its a lovely place to live .......but you have to pick the right spot!!. We live off of Garston Lane which is very quiet and the folks nearby are really nice.

It will be better than 90 minutes but I would day that 20 minutes to Grenoble Road is extremely optimistic! (You'd need to double that, at least, for an evening game)

It is a bit of an odd place as a trip to the aforementioned Co-op will illustrate. Perhaps the worst service of any shop I have been in as well.

Property flooding may not be an issue but the roads really do flood very quickly and can be utterly impassable.

Just waiting for a call back from the developer now. We've said yes to buying but are waiting for a deal (we hope!)

Nowhere near the A417, saw the entrance to the quarry yesterday. Had a look at the flood map and only a minor worry but not anywhere near the house we are looking at.

We're both retired as well, now. I took early retirement this month. Looking forward to a walk to the pub, when it opens again. Also, getting my bigger kitchen with open plan dining/family area at last!

Less than 20 miles to the ground, should be able to do that in under 30 mins, at least?
The local co-op will be fine for the odd bits and bobs, big shop at Sainsbugs or Tescos (although we prefer M&S or Waitrose, of course!)

It takes me 30 mins and I line in steventon so have to agree 40 mins minimum journey time

On a good day manor 30 mins but the A420 does have it’s moments in fact quite a lot of moments, a night match via the A 420 could be up to an hour if not more and if you came up via wantage or the Hanneys you would still be looking at 45 mins and going via the Hanneys would probably be your beat option

There's a Waitrose in Wantage! Yep, on a clear run you'd do Grenoble Rd in 30 mins and probably on a Saturday too. The roads do tend to get a bit more clogged on weekday evenings though...

Edit: In total agreement with Bazzer!

Nice community SIV. I would argue Faringdon, Waitrose or Tesco is your closest supermarket rather than Wantage.

A420 can be dodgy but in SIV you are well placed to use the back roads.

You are pretty much committed to using a car though unless you don't mind cycling on the A417.
