Although just before my time, his name is synonymous with motor racing and F1; a chequered flag we could have done without.....

RIP Sir Sterling .... In my 15 years on the national management committe of Federation Of British Scooter Clubs ( which was the controlling body of motor scooter sport until the very late 90s, when it transmorphed into BSSO - British Scooter Sport Organisation)- I was lucky enough to meet Sir Stirling several times , as he was the hon patron of FBSC.... a proper gentleman, as well as a Vespa owner and rider

To survive the crash he had was amazing, to keep on racing as he did, even better. A true gentleman

His name is immortalised by every police officer who stops someone for speeding by the phrase "Who do you think you are? Stirling Moss?"

Strange that after all these years it hasn't been replaced by a more "current" driver. RIP.

I seem to remember him tell a story on a chat show about being stopped for speeding by the police..............

Sarge, that's a pretty collectable scooter with those chrome handlebars. Does anyone have that reg. no.? It gives it some real provenance.

early Douglas (made in Bristol )- its an early rod model 125 - for the UK market the headlight ( which was mounted on the mudguard elsewhere worldwide - known as Faro Basso) was relocated to be mounted on the legshields. Sir Stirling had several Vespa scooters, certainly one of which he was still riding in his 70s ...I wouldnt be at all surprised if his Family estate still had all his Vespa scooters? ) Reg number is (as was required at the time ) on the front mudguard NAD187
