Just for balance, it seems another "two party" system has come to an end with a Nationalist/Populist party taking the largest chunk of the vote. The European landscape is certainly changing.

I wonder is Mr Varadkar will make them vote again? ;)

Ireland crumbling... or perhaps with Bojo & co ( running to cummings' agenda) way of getting Brexit done, Ireland is tentatively voting for/ towards a united Ireland?

Sinn Féin are not going to do the bidding of Boris and the Brexit nutters. I've read Brexiters celebrate that the Irish PM is likely to change... They gave no thought to why, and to which parties will gain influence.

Is it not time to move on??

Or are you suggesting these Irish voters are also "nutters/racists/gammons etc etc" ?

The way voting works is that those who bother to vote can "win".

With Sinn Feinn reinventing themselves & adopting policies formerly and traditionally those of Labour, from the outside looking in, it seems to me that in Ireland /Sinn Feinn are doing exactly what Scotland/SNP have already done, there are now nationalist with a social conscience partys all but replacing Labour as a political force in both Ireland and Scotland

Damned populism and nationalism. Oh wait... ;)

A very interesting set of results from Ireland, and certainly bears viewing from the UK for many reasons. It will be interesting to see if SF find the same issues as Lib Dems and Labour did in the past 10 years.

I did enjoy the banter with some Irish friends this morning after 3 1/2 years of crowing by them about the UKs political system! Enjoy the craic lads :ROFLMAO:

Democracy sent a consistent message on several occasions, some of us backed the "winners" on each occasion. ;) ?

You’re right, more people voted for remain/second referendum parties than Brexit-supporting parties in the most recent election, but sadly our broken electoral system didn’t take that into account!

Are you neglecting A: The Referendum (simple numbers) and B: The European Parliament elections (Proportional representation) that remain didn`t win either?

Anyway, back on track....................... Ireland uses the First preference system..... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51432660

Perhaps we need a poll thread, predicting which European nation will be targeted next for a negative thread?

People suggested I was picking on Germany so Ireland was treated with parity. ;)

1) It is awesome that Ireland's voters have realised that a two party system is idiotic, and that it's appropriate to vote for a wider range of parties that allows your vote a little more specificity. Oh for British and American voters to do the same.......

2) Sinn Fein ran on a platform of affordable housing, worker rights, reduction in the pension age, cheaper childcare, more police and (of course) Irish unification. They are "critical but supportive" of the EU. So I'm not quite sure why Essexyellows is putting that one in the win column for his side?!?

It’s hilarious that the idea of a bridge from Scotland to N Ireland has been raised again. They would both be foreign countries by the time it’s finished.

Going for the second bankruptcy!! Fair play to them. They can do what they want now we don't have to pay for their mistakes.

He’s trying to make up for the one he couldn’t get done in London. A UK built bridge that’s outside the UK!
