Italian Football Monkey chants "not racist"......

The Police and Spurs have been unable to find no evidence of Monkey Chants at the Spurs v Chelsea game:

Clearly, the authorities have and are still taking it seriously but have been unable to find anything either way.

The problem is unless the offender does something obvious, like a full on "ape" impression to the TV cameras, there is little evidence other than the noise from "someone in a crowd".

So where do you draw the "acceptable abuse" line? Fat? Ginger? Parentage? The Referee? The opposition (Scum for example)?

Its better to let such behaviour die out naturally through peer pressure and the offenders mates having a word IMHO.

Most grounds now have CCTV covering the crowd - so there is a possibility of the offender being caught.

I think there are always going to be pillocks who think it clever to use racist language - and they tend to congregate with others of a similarly low IQ, so the chances of their mates 'having a word' are slight. And (before anyone says it) it is not easy for other members of the crowd to wade into a group of such people and tell them to shut up.

If someone is caught (by TV, CCTV, stewards etc) then chuck them out, and keep them out.

Spurs can track all fans at their ground on their CCTV camera system they have in place, so I suspect their review of the footage has been very extensive. Finding nothing is a bit of surprise in that light as presumably the stand it came from is known and Rudiger knew what slurs were used, so it would have been an easier to task to look at particular offenders.

Who knows what they'd find if the same system was used at Grenoble Road in the North Stand toilets.

Spurs are my B team. On occasions at the Lane I have heard a local chant following a particularly robust challenge by a spurs player. Went along the lines of the rap “Who let the dogs out, Who? Who? Who?” For ‘Dogs, substitute ’yids’ . Son’s challenge was silly and petulant but looked robust.

Perhaps this is what was heard? Just sayin.

Brexit will rid Britain of racism, because all the racists, like many other Brexiters, will be too busy making stuff for export once we've left the world's greatest free market and are trading (freely) around the rest of the world (again).

Anyone in that B team good enough for us? A couple of full backs and a striker?

Ian, I was thinking that Spurs, the way they are playing at the moment, would be better off buying Rob Dickie and Moose to shore up their defence rather than sending us any of their underachieving back four!

but I doubt Daniel will spend the money...

And so it goes on............................. what else will be "listed as offensive" ???

And now "aeroplane gestures" are "offensive"........................

What is going on the list next?

That wedge that started of as something thin is getting thicker rather quickly.

To be fair that's not what the story says at all! The Man City fans wound up the Man United fans by doing aeroplane gestures and the Man United fans responded by throwing seats at them. The managers complained that it is rivalry gone too far if you end up throwing seats at each other, which a bit different from anyone being "offended".

To be fair, calling out idiots doing that in reference to the Munich Air crash is fine by me.

I get the bit about ripping out seats but surely that is the issue?

Otherwise "because somebody made aeroplane gestures" becomes a valid excuse for doing it!!

So what next? What about our multi-fingered friends down the road?

Oh sorry.......... someone with insufficient or excess digits might get offended! ❄❄❄⛄

That's kind of what I'm getting at - it looks like in reality it is all about the seats. The quotes from PG & OGS don't refer to the aeroplanes at all, they just say "I don't know what happened but it is not nice," and
"I have got to stand behind Pep ... Football is a game we should all enjoy, spectators and the ones playing ... We want rivalry but keep it at the same level. Let's make sure we eradicate this now."

The problem looks to be the reporting, with the aeroplane business being mentioned in relation to social media and probably the sensibilities of a million random armchair warriors, and I'm pretty sure it is not the first time Citeh fans have stuck their arms out and not the first time Man Utd fans have responded violently.

So, I agree with you that "offence"-based reporting of incidents is a bit of a slippery slope.

And of the same ilk................. Alastair Stewart "has to leave" because of implied racism??

"The reasons for the veteran broadcaster's departure have not been confirmed, but it came weeks after he was involved in a Twitter exchange with a black man in which he quoted a Shakespeare passage including the phrase "angry ape". Stewart has used this verse once before on Twitter in response to a user who was not identifiably black."

According to reports and screengrabs, Stewart engaged in a row about how the monarchy was funded, and posted a passage from Measure For Measure that included the line: "Most ignorant of what he's most assur'd - His glassy elegance - like an angry ape."

At the time, the user - who has received online abuse since Stewart's departure - responded: "Just an @ITV newsreader referring to me as an ape with the cover of Shakespeare. Measure for measure, Alistair [sic] is a disgrace."

Really??? Just proves social media is a minefield of people taking offence.

People (of all sorts, views, colours and creeds) are looking for something to be offended about (or for someone to offend) on social media - especially the 'reactive' types such as Twitter. Disagreeing with anyone seems to have to be done in full-on 'outrage' mode!

Kind of ironic, in some regards, when the individual who complained has made some racist statements on social media about white people over the past couple of years before remarkably deleting them all today - can't think why he'd do that. Sadly, people are asking his employer to sack him now for the very thing he complained about.

Equally, Stewart used the same content for a tweet at white person in 2018 too. No one was offended then.

All seems massively bonkers to me. What a time to be alive!
