General VAR and Goalies?

VAR - How can it be amended to work properly for the benefit of the game not just the referees.

Is it just me, but if the current philosophy for VAR assessment for offside (I.e. 1 mm of a finger tip is ‘offside’ when the ball is kicked) were applied to goal keepers kicking the ball out from their area then every goalie I have seen, should have been sent off for deliberate handball within minutes of the start of the game.

In regards to offside, if it takes 30 seconds to a minute to get everything properly lined up to work out the exact moment the ball is kicked, and the lines in the right place to deduce whether a fraction of a toe is ahead of the defender, the guy is pretty much onside.

They currently don't have the technology to work out the exact moment the ball is kicked. They like to make it look like they do but they don't.

When IS the ball kicked? When the boot hits it, or when it has left the boot? That couple of frames could make all the difference to some of these decisions (which IMO shows how daft it is!). If a player balanced the ball on his foot and then flicked it over the defence, would the attacker be able to run into space during the time it was balanced?

Some of this is a bit like the 'low catch' thing in cricket replays. Quite often a perfectly decent catch will look as if it has hit the ground from a couple of camera angles only to be shown as perfectly legitimate from another! Just showing an incident in super slow motion makes it appear very different.

I would have a similar system to cricket where the Referees/Linos decision on tight calls is the precedence. So the silly arm pit hair calls go with the officials call at the time - of course football is more complicated as the Linos have been told to let the game go, but that can be changed.

Many of us said VAR should be introduced on a limited basis so that football could learn to integrate it in into the game, the authorities decided to go in as they have, so the mess that has been created is purely theirs. It doesn't help that PGMOL are a wholly incompetent organisation, so they exacerbated the situation further.

Most of the options you have given.
Offside- the advantage should be with the forward. So whether feet or not, if it takes more than 30 seconds it should be a goal.
Handball- this is ridiculous in my view. It should only be handball in the area ( and almost certain goal) if it is intentional. So if it is smashed against the hand from a few feet how can they be intentional?

The main thing though, in.my view it should be clear and obvious.so clearly offside or goal, clearly handball or not

Beyondthefourth.

not quite as daft as it first looks? Perhaps putting load cells (Transmitting pressure data to the VAR guys every time someone got kicked) all over the body of premiship prima Donnas might stop some of em from rolling around as if shot every time someone came within six inches of them...

but I won’t hold my breath

I think the whole system should be used on a review basis only. Not automatic as it is now.
It should then be down to the Captains to decide to review if an incident occurs.
If a review is not upheld, the team lose one of their reviews, like they do in Cricket.

Absolutely right. Two lose-able/renewable reviews per game with captain or manager to 'appeal'. If the ref/linos keep getting things wrong that would put it right, but would stop the endless delays. Or scrap the whole sorry mess.

Each manager should have two yellow handkerchiefs one of which can be dramatically hurled onto the pitch to initiate a VAR review whenever.

That would work well. During the review substitutions could be made freely and wouldn't count as part of the three normally permitted. Oh, and if the review failed a bin full of Sprite would be tipped over the manager by a woman wearing a skimpy vest.

Would be good for the TV audience and make the game more of a spectacle in general.

Paul, Don’t forget the game could also be split into four Quarters with time outs permitted to allow for commercial breaks. That way the game could last upwards of four hours. Frequent Interjection from the scantily clad cheer leaders would be welcomed ....until they were inevitably banned by the ‘Revolutionary campaign against the demeaning of cheerleaders’

Watching MOTD tonight.
If a ground has the set-up for VAR then it can be used in the FA Cup.
Surely that has to be in breach of the laws of the game ?
IMO it's definitely against the spirit of the game.
It's either VAR at all matches in the competition. Or no VAR
was the same last year. absolute shambles - Palace's Milivojevic gets sent off after a review because they are at home, if they had been playing away it would have been a yellow card.

Was shocked when I realised this. It means two matches in the exact same round of the exact same competition may be played under entirely different rules. How can that be allowed?

Bin it........... but that won`t happen because there is too much £££££`s riding on human fallibility...

An interesting case in a game in Germany yesterday.

Attacker gets (fairly) tackled right on the edge of the box by the defender.
Ref gives a penalty.
VAR in the ref's ear.
But...all VAR can do in this situation is say that the penalty decision is wrong.
The decision is then "free kick", but VAR CAN'T say that the free kick wasn't a foul, as it's not in the remit.
So a free kick is given and yellow is shown for a fair tackle, despite the situation being clarified on TV.

Bonkers!
