John Coleman belongs in that category of manager who excels in being the underdog. I can’t imagine that he’d be happy coming to a club so much bigger and with much higher expectations. Him and Accrington are a good fit in a similar way to Keith Hill and Rochdale and Paul Tisdale and Exeter, so I’d be surprised if he wanted the gig here.
Alan Stubbs is a curious one. His spell at Rotherham was a disaster but could anything have saved them anyway? The season last year for them unravelled so quickly and they were relegated by 1 April and ended up 28 points behind the nearest spot to stay up. I don’t think that their relegation was all his doing.
I’m dubious of records in Scotland. Aside from Windass and Johnson (the former had loads of form in England to start with), it’s never been a very happy hunting ground for us with bang-average to terrible players signing for us from north of the border or at the very least proving some measure of success up there afterwards – Mackay, Townsley, Lilley, Kinniburgh, Twigg and so on. I have the same scepticism about managers!
