Fan's View - 19/20 - Shrewsbury at home

I love your reports, but as you suggested about the traffic changes you have overreacted! Perhaps shutting off some of the roundabouts will turn out to be a mistake and restrict flexibility. I think the intention was to simplify the traffic flow at various areas around the complex. Coming out from the road from the bowlplex to the roundabout is possibly key, there was a man waving to encourage you out I think! And to allow this was there a man with a stop go lolly pop? Once cars are aware of this it could speed up the flow. I would have thought with a bit of development and learning from the drone footage traffic flows could be speeded up from the two main car parks. The overflow carpark will only gain if the rest of the site is cleared quicker as it will always be hampered by the crossing by the bowlplex and number of pedestrians. Give it time they are trying to help the situation with the big matches coming up.

I've already vented my spleen reference the official so I'll leave it at that (useless pillock that he was) As to the Traffic management, well, I am also none the wiser as to why the roundabouts were blocked. Made no sense at all. Where were the controls in the car park? We noticed no improvement, none.
If, as you say Paul, this was a learning exercise, then we can only hope that they have sat down after the event and analysed all the data collected (if that was part of the exercise) and come to the conclusion that a different approach is required.
One thing troubles me, how come a private organisation have the power to close public highways? Was that sanctioned? And, having some hi-vis suited chap telling when I can enter a roundabout and when not is, to be frank, rather patronising and superfluous. Thought occurs to me, next week is MK Dons away, we have booked a space in their car park, want to see how it should be done? Watch how they get us away after the game.

Give it a chance it's the first week!
It's the first time I have seen anything attempted here! Stop moaning!

You have the same parking strategy as me and did the same traffic manoeuvre as well! B..... daft blocking off two roundabouts.
I would guess there are quite a few people who plan to park in the car park but, for the bigger games, especially midweek, if the queue goes back to the second roundabout then they merely go round the roundabout and go back and park in Sandford but, in theory, if the roundabouts are coned off then you have to keep going right up to the stadium surely creating more congestion. Is doing a U-turn, in such circumstances, a traffic offence?
That ref. B...... useless. Who is responsible for adding time on at the end for time wasting, the fourth official controlling the board, or the ref on the basis the time on the board "Is a minimum of ...."

First time perhaps, Fred but for many it caused problems that were not there before and to block the roundabouts off was utterly ridiculous. If I was a local I would be fuming. But yes, they could possibly improve it. Some winners and some losers I suppose. We'll see how it develops but it is going to be a very different scenario v Man C with a gate about double what we had on Saturday. For big games like that I approach from the other way and use a roundabout to then go back down the Grenoble Road and get the first available space facing Cowley way. Were the roundabouts blocked off East of the ground too. It's the roundabout thing that pissed me off more than anything I suppose.

It has since been pointed out to me that some people legitimately park in the Science Park for matches, and I assume there would be one or two workers there too, but coming out onto the roundabout they were not allowed to travel West but had to go East and get stuck in traffic in all the traffic coming out of the car park. That would have contributed to the problems by the Priory. No wonder tempers were short.

I honestly don't think it had been thought through properly. It seems to have been, hey lets try and get cars out of the car park quicker but sod the rest.

I suspect blocking off the roundabouts before the match will turn out to be a not a good idea I straight away saw the disadvantages. The overall plan was to have a freeflowing road with minimum junctions to get cars away! Could it be a advantage for big matches? Why did people lose their temper? Was there queues all the way past the priory? To turn round?

Yes there was a queue all the way past the Priory blocking those who wanted to get out and turn right. Tempers were rather frayed.
I'd like to see them try this blocking of roundabouts outside the County Ground you know where.
Free flowing is great but some had very little flow. Blocking the roundabout at 1 o'clock was madness. Even if they had to be blocked, which I absolutely don't think they should be, there's no need to do it until the match is taking place.

You do get the impression that the people arranging these changes have not observed what usually happens, I would have had a look for a few matches first! This blocking the roundabouts hinders people being dropped off and picked up. I expect oxvox will pickup some of this constructive opinion and pass it on.

Can’t really compare with MK Dons as they’ve got 2 exists on opposite sides of the complex.

Ignoring the possible error of restricting the roundabouts, in the future when leaving the stadium via the roundabout by the bowlplex the plan is to get you round the roundabout and out quicker by using Marshall's to direct the traffic.
Sensible idea yes? Would more Marshall's in Stadium help? Maybe.

Sensible ? Need more evidence and also to consider the knock on effect. So possibly.
More marshalls possibly. But at what cost there was a ridiculous amount of them around on Saturday.

I got to the ground at 2.45 and walked straight back to Sandford after the game, how many Marshall's do you think there were?

I did mention to the policeman before the game who was with the manned unmanned drone in the blocked pathway next to the Priory what was going to happen about the cones on the roundabouts after the game to enable vehicles to get out rather than going back to the congested roundabout by the stadium, and he said they were going to be removed! Obviously not.

Just stop pedestrians continually crossing the zebra crossing near F&B and make shift crossing near roundabout before and after the game, and the traffic will flow more easily coming in & out of the stadium car parking.

Oh, and clued up car parking stewards would help, especially the one managing the first right turn I to the stadium. Seems to spend an age talking to drivers which ultimately means the traffic backs up!

I have no idea. I was talking about the game and not paying attention. It was the numbers milling around before hand that I noted. I didn't count them though.
