Ex Player Last Pick in PE XI

Can't believe no one's mentioned Franny Green yet. Quite impressive to be totally anonymous in our promotion-winning side

Very harsh on Newey - the guy made over 380 football league appearances which suggests he is what I thought he was at the time, an average L2 full back. There's no shame in that. Alex Jeannin meanwhile looked like we'd pulled a guy from the stands to make up the numbers. Who'd had 10 pints before the game.

Lewis Chalmers and John Grant were pretty spectacular in the Conference promotion season. Lee Fowler turned out to be a disaster for us also, but I’ll always be proud as punch to be the man who took the photo of him wearing the tuxedo t-shirt.

Also a Tony Obi guy, but...from more recent seasons, no love (hate) for Junior Brown..?

I quoted Francis green along with Levi Reid earlier in the thread could add the sand man Kevin sandwith

Wilder’s strange attempt to ‘strengthen’ our promotion run in almost derailed us completely. None of them were any good and all were soon dropped in favour of those who started the season. Lewis ‘Judith’ Chalmers was probably the best of the bunch, but John Grant and Franny Green were dreadful.

There are a lot of shouts for bang average or forgettable players in this thread. The likes of Sappleton, Farrell, Newey weren’t anything special but neither were their contributions to Oxford United anything fatal. Courtney Pitt meanwhile is the sort of character that deserves a place in the worst OUFC squad. Useless player signed by an incompetent manager and highlighted a move that took us from third to outside the playoffs.

In terms of worst players on ability, Emiliano Diaz romps it. Played at a level way above his station, even Ramon realised Junior was out of his depth most of the time. He must’ve made less than 90 minutes of game time in his half dozen appearances with us. I think he was a winger but to qualify you really have to be a footballer first!

Kevin Sandwith was a reasonable player for the level we were at. Not the greatest but when compared to Rufus Brevett and Alex Jeannin he was very good!*

*In Brevett's case, I'm only comparing his time with us, not his previous career.

In an era of outstandingly bad players Sandwith was almost competent (Farrell (above) was so nearly competent that you didn't know he was on the pitch most of the time). Already mentioned Jeannin and Francis Green clearly was utterly hopeless in a 'please don't let the ball go near him' way.

There could be an award for the Most Inept Performance, which I hereby (as POTUS etc) award to Andy Burgess for the home play-off vs Exeter, collusion from Jim Smith (who would use a player terrified of tackling and heading at left back) but that was a colossal study in incapability and dereliction of duty. Well done Andy!

Disregarding the non league years, and despite THAT goal, I’d genuinely think of Gino Van Kessell as amongst the worst footballers I’ve seen.

It’s not that he didn’t have some good attributes. He was pretty fast, strong and got the odd goal or two.

But his football brain (or lack of it) was inexplicable. He didn’t help out with anything defensively (and was more of a liability if he ever bothered), didn’t know how to challenge, press or compete in the air and generally played like a child who hadn’t yet learnt the basics.

When he scored against Pompey, there were a few days when you thought “Christ, we’ve done well to unearth this gem and 800 Euros is going to be a steal”. That didn’t last long!

The complete encapsulation of the Pep Clotet period. Would love to hear what KR genuinely thought about the squad he inherited...

Over the last few weeks on T'Manor podcast, we've been building a "Last Pick in PE" XI of the some of the poorer players to have pulled on a yellow shirt. Either through one off horror appearances, consistently being under average or being memorable for the wrong reasons, we've slowly worked our way through a lineup for a 4-4-2.

Currently, we're running a poll to take one of the wide positions with choices from Courtney Pitt, Gino van Kessel, Kieron St Amie and Simon Hackney. This poll can be found at
Take a look, pass on your comments and more importantly, cast your vote!
There will be a second poll for the other wide position some time next week. We appreciate that everyone has different opinions so we're open to hearing as many of them as possible and then try to make room to discuss them on future episodes. We're not expecting everyone to agree with every position, that's the beauty of the polls and we have seen a fair amount of debate as we've gone through the weeks.
The XI as stands is:
GK - Mike Salmon
RB - Dwight Tiendalli
CB - Ben Futcher
CB - Leo Roget
LB - Tom Newey

T'Manor podcast is put together by a group of Oxford fans who are all based or have been based in Yorkshire and are members of the Yorkshire Yellows supporters group. We generally release a new episode every Sunday night/Monday morning with content including match reviews, match previews, a L1 wrapup, an on this day feature and a OUFC themed quiz. You can follow our twitter feed at https://twitter.com/t_manorpodcast whilst our 15 episodes so far are available to listen at

Very harsh on Leo Roget, he wasn't that bad of a player overall. I think there's a difference between being a bad player and having some bad performances

He may hold the record for most inept performance at the Kassam, when he returned for Mansfield playing on the wing and just stood on the wing waiting for the ball to come to him - which it rarely did

To be honest I think even that would have been overpriced...
