hi all,

Moved to oxford last year for uni but am missing football, so I've decided to come along to a few Oxford united games (hopefully starting tomorrow!)

What are the bar facilities like in the ground? Can I get a decent pint (for a decent price!) or is it best to go elsewhere first?

Cheers!

The ground has a soulless bar in the quad (glass bar) and another soulless bar in the Holiday Inn next door. A lot of fans do not like drinking in the Kassam as it lines the landlords pockets.

The Bowlplex is nearby, also in the O-Zone complex is a Sports Bar called J's (https://www.jssportsbar.co.uk). Both of these get really busy. Further afield, you have The Blackbird, which does have a bit of a reputation...

All I can say about J's is that they have a surplus of pool tables and a deficiency in lighting but, they do serve beer. (I think that's what we observed being handed over at the bar)

If you are concerned about price The William Morris in Templars Square Cowley is a Wetherspoons. A bus from Templars Square To Sandy Lane takes about two minutes and then it's about five or ten minutes walk to the ground.

The Bird is ok, gets busy but a 5 min walk to the ground.
The holiday inn may be a bit soulless but theres usually quite a few Oxford in there, they don't normally allow away supporters.
The Bolwplex does get busy and seems to take ages to get served, home an away.
The bar in the stadium stopped selling draft beer, not sure if thats still the case.
The sports bar may look busy but you don't have to wait long to get served, they usually allow home and away supporters. the prices arnt too bad, 4pint pitcher £12 is probably the best value, although it's carling. it's very busy but empties after the prem game finishes 2.30ish
You can even get a beer in the golf adventure place next to the sports bar.

The 'Bird is fine on match-days (speaking as a middle/upper-class tweed jacket-wearing cove with a cut-glass public-school accent and addiction to hyphens), gets quite busy for big matches, uses plastic glasses for the hoi polloi and has a poor selection of proper beer - Guinness is OK, canned Red Stripe is as canned Red Stripe does, and the 'ale' is John Smith's (if it can be called beer at all), there's a plethora of lagers for those lacking taste-buds and loving fizzy pop. There is a chip shop across the road which is a chip shop and a bookies, too.

The Catherine Wheel at Sandford used to do hand-pulled beer and is too far to give a 16-stone agent a piggy-back from. There's also a pub in Littlemore which is used happily by some supporters and probably has 'real-ale'. They're both 15 minutes walk from the Grenoble Road fortress.

Being of "better stock" than the local ruffians on this forum I get a glass for my drink of choice at The `Bird.
Obviously revealing the "look" you have to give to be recognised is more secret than the highest level "On The Square".
:) :)

Cheers for the suggestions everyone. I'll have a look, guess it depends on what company I decide to bring (if any!)

Oh come on. What is "On the Square" and does Sir Geoffrey Boycott present it?

Have you decided to go? And if so have you found somewhere for a pint or three?!

As a Brizzle City fan @oxbris , you'll probably be aware that Matty Taylor is currently on loan at OUFC from Bristol City, and has of late found his scoring boots.... hopefully he'll grab one or two in todays match too

Yep I am definitely going today.
Haven't decided on the pints though, still feeling a bit worse for wear after going out last night! Plus, I'm going alone so will probably skip going to a bar/pub.

Yeah, looking forward to seeing Matty play here. Been hearing good things so would be interesting to see how he's fit into the squad here.
