England ??????? v India ??

NZ will be a tough game. Reckon we have the better 11 but they have the tournaments best batsman and bowler.

It’s been a tremendous competition . Let down by lack of free to air coverage. The cricket authorities tend to lack imagination don’t they?

Oh and England’s fielding today was phenomenal.

You are right PRB. I'm not sure it's been *that* tremendous TBH (it certainly didn't produce many close matches initially) but the lack of any cricket at all on the free telly is a sure way to make sure cricket becomes an increasingly minority sport in this country. This tournament was a perfect opportunity to correct that (cf WWC).

Those last 5/6 overs were very strange. India just didn't go for it, more or less ran it down. Didn't look like they wanted to win it. Better to be all out trying than 5 down and lose by 30!?

Having slept on this, I started to wonder whether the powers that be would be checking for “unusual betting patterns “ ?

I thought it was odd too, but listening to Jonathan Agnew this morning...
India haven't actually qualified yet. Once they were unlikely to get the target, it was better for them (so far as run rate etc is concerned) to lose by losing as few wickets as possible for some reason. That seems loopy to me (a better run rate by scoring less runs, even at the expense of wickets???) - but apparently is the case.
I still think they could have got a LOT closer if they'd actually tried and apparently Indian fans aren't over the moon either (according to the BBC website).

perhaps India fancy their chances in a rematch V England in the semi finals ... avoid Aus for as long as they can? :sneaky: .... there again maybe England wanted it more yesterday?

My first post on this thread was wrong. Neither team can get to the semi-finals. Even if SL get 10 points they won't have won as many games as England (which is the first decider if teams are on equal points) - yesterday's result knocked SL out.

Kohli complaining about the short boundary with a flat pitch. To quote Kohli from the article:

"If batsmen are able to reverse sweep you for six on a 59-metre boundary there is not much you can do as a spinner," he said.
"One side was 82 metres. They had to be a bit smart in the lines they bowled, but you can't do much with a short boundary."

So you can't do much about it, well apparently England could as they only conceded one 6 in the Indian innings. So I would suggest Kohli needs to talk to his bowlers about their lines they were bowling.

Same for both teams.
I'll repeat myself again! For some reason it was obvious to me that India didn't 'go for it' in those last 6 overs. They were nudging 1's and 2's. They could have still won it but went into a suspicious looking shell!!

Yes, that was sour grapes from Kohli - a very bad loser! If the boundary was so short -how come they couldn't clear it?

It's the ICC I believe that makes these decisions and not England.
Agree with others- it is the same for both teams.

Eh, I'm pretty sure that MS Dhoni & Virat Kohli don't need to be taking backhanders from bookies.

If there's one nation's top cricketers that don't need to be corrupt, it's India. Those guys are in so many commercials, they basically print money.

It was still weird, but has to be the case that Dhoni didn't think he could get the runs, therefore was more worried about maintaining their NRR.

They did say on the commentary yesterday that Dhoni has recent form on run chases for being randomly slow and not being his usual destructive self

I actually believe Dhoni was trying his best to chase but the march of time told him otherwise. He cold barely hit the ball off the square.

Yes, that was very odd. They literally had nothing more to lose - why not swing the bat? Just one six all innings, and appearing to give up with five wickets still in hand...
Still, I'll take the points. Wednesday's game against NZ will be a nail biter!

Trying to keep Pakistan out of the semis [emoji6]
