What are the attributes to be considered when appointing manager of England Ladies team? Surely two are:-
Previous experience as a manager.
Knowledge and experience in ladies football.
Does Phil Neville tick these boxes?
Should they not have selected the best female manager with experience of ladies football?

I think it should be the best man or woman for the job, so gender is irrelevant in my opinion. Having said that, I also understand the merits of female involvement, so maybe he’ll ask someone like Kelly Smith to be a part of his team.

But no, he doesn’t really. Bit of an odd choice, other than the publicity side of things and bringing more eyes to the women’s game. Luckily for him, he has a lot of talent to choose from and a very solid foundation to build upon, so hopefully he can take us forward.

That's absolutely shocking from Neville.

It's would 'have', not would 'of'.

It's a bit of a slap in the face to those currently working in the women's game. If they were bringing in a high profile successful manager or coach with no/little knowledge of the women's game maybe. But someone who didn't even apply for the job who has had little coaching let alone management experience. Maybe they thought they were appointing his sister (who I believe manages the England netball team).

What's happened to the root and branch reform of the FA called for after the last debacle? No change and no repercussions. The FA is a joke.

Does Neville need to know the women's game to be coach? Surely it's just football. In the same way, the style of coaching adapts to the professional and amateur level. Plus he will have plenty of good staff around him. It's a bit patronising to say only people who have coached women's football can coach women's football. Whether Neville is the right coach though, don't know. And probably not.

As for the Twitter stuff. Dear oh dear. Searching for outrage as usual.

what a world we live in when people want to constantly dig up dirt on others.

Given that was from 7/8 years ago? is it not possible a person may have changed?

Being contrarian. Would it not be a benefit to the women's team to have a coach who has worked with a different variety of coaches and experienced top level football on the mens side of the game? There would have to be a level of coaching at the top UEFA/FIFA level, regardless of gender of coach or team though.

Given the England women's team has been more successful than the men's team of late, maybe some of the women's setup should take over the men's side....

They haven't though. They are not really comparable in my view, women play against women and men play against men.

Exactly, so is parachuting a name male who has 1 game as caretaker manager for a club he part owns under his belt into the women's team a good idea?

I obviously don't know who else was interviewed but he certainly wouldn't of been my ideal candidate. Added in to the mix his awful punditry (in my view), it makes the choice more baffling.

Seems like a lot of people were interviewed, a lot wanted the job but a lot didn't want the press scrutiny that comes with it.

That's what the FA are saying. They strangely didn't think that the press might actually talk to some of the coaches in question and find out that's not exactly the full story.
Some of them the FA questioned their qualifications, even though they have more than Neville. Others they went to saying they wanted an English manager, even though they were talking to someone that wasn't. It just looks a shambles in the same way they said they vetted 'some' of Neville's tweets, just apparently not the ones that could be controversial. Given the circumstances that led the position to be open, you would think they would have a well run and transparent selection process. Apparently that is beyond the capabilities of the FA.
I really do hope that Neville is a success, and can take the women's team on to the next level. The last thing the sport needs is another FA induced **** up.

Even if it was 5, rather than the 140 odd they claim, it's still concerning that good coaches don't want the job because of how toxic it is when your entire life is raked over for even the merest sign of outrage and you spend too much time in your reign apologising because a few people are offended. With the FA as they are, it makes it doubly worse.

Why even bother when you can just lead a normal life?

The problem is raking over old social media (and probably be taken out of context to suit the reporters agenda) will now happen whatever you do if you are in the public eye in any form. So unless people are willing to put up with that then it basically rules out being an actor, politician, sportsperson etc.

Or how about not being a dick on social media? A dick with bad grammar, to boot.

There is that and in plenty of cases justified but plenty can be taken completely out of context (such as a joke).

Those who do the searches/get in a lather over this have never written anything on social media that is insulting or belittles people. I'm sure every single one is whiter than white.

Likewise, this raking over old ground from many years before, especially if young at the time, doesn't allow for people learning or changing their view.

There has to be a balance that has to be found or skilled/capable people won't put themselves forward for important roles in things like Politics.

It was 5 years ago! Not 25.
