Totally hypothetical question....

What if we folded, out of business, gone.

If we wanted to create a new (pheonix) club, what level of football would we start at? And what level of funding would we need?

Without the club (or at least one able to pay rent), the stadium would be knocked down and redeveloped as housing. Meaning we'd have to ground share (though I doubt City will want us at CPF) or find a pitch elsewhere. Probably start in the Hellenic League or so. Starts getting serious at Conference South level in terms of funding, but can be done I suppose.

Might as well put all the investment into Oxford City, buy a new stadium and then sign Williamson, Ricky and Jefferson Louis on pensioner contracts!!:(

Perish the thought. We’d have all the issues/problems we currently have but would be at least 5 divisions lower down the pyramid

Absolute worse case scenario the debt level gets too high and we fold.

Then yeah go and do it all again as long as oxford uniteds somehere in the name we try and keep the badge+ always play in yellow and blue I would watch them in the hellenic league along with a few thousand others. Which should be enough to get us back to the conference on crowd revenue.

I wouldnt trust the council to let us buy a football pitch sized patch of grass and put a yellow hand rail round it though. Let alone build a stand with 500 seats a clubhouse and floodlights.

No floodlights - no Hellenic league I believe

Its an interesting question given that we have two teams in the city. Would people, and therefore investment, naturally gravitate to the team playing in the higher league? City are what, two promotions away from league football?

Don't get me wrong, I am Oxford United through and through and would naturally back that project however I could. It'd be interesting to see if the general football going public would though. City would have a massive opportunity to market themselves as the best standard of football, and United may struggle to get that floating fan base back.

That also leads to investment. With a large fanbase we'd walk early leagues, however at some stage you reach a level where say hypothetically you've lost 2,000 fans to a potential league City side, then all of a sudden your a small to mid size conference team. That league was hard enough with a large fanbase and decent budget. All phoenix teams seem to hit their level, which is usually lower than anyone expects. Wimbledon seem to be the exception to that rule, but they have massively punched above their weight with a team that is a mid league two side really.

Perish the thought but it could be a blessing in disguise albeit take a few years to get back, IMHO there will be always an attraction from some rich types to get involved..

City ???? there is only one Oxford and that is UNITED!

I might be the only one, but is it strange that I'd find that really enjoyable? Having a beer pitchside and visiting lots of quirky little football grounds again. Working class footballers we can relate to and without the shadow of FK lurking over us, I can think of worse things in life!

Merge with Oxford City.

City get to keep the Oxford part of their name and United keep the United bit.

City get to keep the blue part of their colours and United get to keep the yellow.

Thereafter the new club will be known as Oxford United and play in yellow and blue.:)

Surreptitiously merging with City actually isn't as far away as some may think!

what with OUFC current chairman having funded 'Citys pitch,
and all but OUFC first team home games, OUFC youth, OUFC ladies etc, taking place at Court Place Farm
and Oxford UNITED ladies have yet to commit to WPL next season, which, maybe, leaves the door open
for a combined United and City ladies team to apply for WPL....if you have tendencies to be suspicious......, like me

This is along the same lines as that ridiculous thread on the old forum !

OUFC now and forever!

We said this in the Conference days! (Pitch side beer and visiting"quirky" grounds)

How? It's a hypothetical question.... Hopefully won't ever happen!

I would be more concerned at the level of security at grenoble road and how we will effectively display the champions league trophy when we win it, hypothetically.....

Surely you mean security at The BreezeBlock

How would City with 500 crowds ever get into the football league? You need a million pound playing budget to get out of the conference, they can’t afford a budget now to challenge to get into the 5th tier.

There natural level is a league below where they are now, where ours is probably about where we are now as things stand.

Fair play to them, I think Oxford is comfortably big enough to support a competitive football league club and a competitive good non league club, but they are no threat to us and there will never be any rivalry, even if a few of there fans think there is, we operate at different levels and have different aspirations.
