Will be big holes to fill if we lose Nelson, Eastwood and Whyte.

We've known about Nelson for a year, so we'll have scouted massively in this area and are likely to have deals lined up. We've also been linked with other goalkeepers and IF Eastwood goes, we will be guaranteed his buy out clause which will cover his replacement. Whyte is being valued at £3-4m, more than enough to get a very capable replacement.

Every close season we have these issues, but so do other clubs. If they stay, great. If they go, we cash in and start again.

We knew about the striker situation this time last year and failed miserably addressing that, so no guarantees your blinkered view will come to fruition this time, but let’s hope they’ve truly learned this time as they say!

And it has been acknowledged by all that last summer should have been better, like January was. The names being mentioned as keepers would be a good fit IF Eastwood goes. £3m+ for Whyte would more than cover a replacement and other positions.

So, I think it is actually you that is being blinkered with your consistent mithering!

I don’t recall you acknowledging that our player acquisitions last summer were extremely poor early last season. You only came on board once the ‘toe the club line’ acknowledged it.

Just glad Whyte who was purchased as one for the future got his chance when the bag of crocks we initially had failed to get over their injuries or got injured very quickly.

I would have put a price tag of £5m+ on him, especially as he’s quite happy to stay. That would show real intent.

You're right, I didn't condemn Carrathurs before he'd kicked a ball. He had a very good fitness record before joining and was unlucky to be injured so early.

I didn't condemn Holmes as we had all seen how good he could be on his day. Everything suggested that a back injection would give him 30+ games and that was a gamble worth taking.

Whyte was an exciting deal, as was Browne. Both were expected to feature frequently and were big pluses from this recruitment.

Mackie was expected to be more of a squad player but contributed well once fit. He did as well as could be expected.

The two recruits which were poor were Smith and Hanson. Smith was a gamble, but it was always clear that we needed more. We should have added, and maybe having to loan a keeper for Eastwood prevented us getting another player in. Hanson on the other hand was a strange deal as he didn't appear to be any better than the positions he was looking to fill. This was a panic buy and one that failed.

So we didn't recruit well enough, but equally it wasn't a total disaster, and the January window indicates that we seem to have got back on track.

As for putting a value on Whyte, it is entirely irrelevant unless you are actually looking at doing a deal. For me, £4m would be a massive return for someone who cost £100k a year ago. An extra million would be lovely, but all fairly immaterial at this stage.

Has there been a player in recent times (under the strains of modern football) that has come to us with a question mark over his fitness or injury history and has then ended up a good, fit signing? Every one I can think of has ended up on the physio table.

Or for any club for that matter? I don't think a sicknote can prosper anymore in the modern game.

People come, people go. It's the model the club is based on and while its sad to see good players leave, it's a chance to get good ones in. It's better than getting a load of 30 year old + stiffs in who take a large wage and you have to pay off to get them to leave.

Let's not forget the young players that are pushing the first team squad.

Big holes in the squad all round right now.
True replacements for those 3 will be key. To be fair it’s been clear for ages that Nelson is off so no surprise there.
If we lose Eastwood, which from that tweet you’d have to say he’s gone, and Whyte then players of equal quality will be hard to sign.
But I’d also say Kashi, Browne, Sinclair, Mous and Graham have left a hole. All were quite regular and effective at different times last season.
Even Garbut made a contribution at the end.

So lots of holes to fill.

Some have left the same hole. Kashi replaced Mous, and looks likely to return. We still have Hanson, Baptiste, occasionally Mous and possibly Ruffels who can play alongside Brannagan.

Browne, Sinclair, Garbutt and Graham generally covered either out wide or upfront. So 4 players, but only really 2 positions. Fosu would be a good replacement, and we might still get Garbutt, Graham or Sinclair back.

Nelson is a loss, but not irreplaceable. Eastwood too, and you would think that £3-4m would help get someone as good as Whyte.

Holes yes, but hardly threadbare and still very very early in the transfer window.

Please don’t start the ‘early in transfer window’ comments even if it is.
